The rim on this 27 penny is thinner than coin and I can see some kind of of letters or numbers on it.Not enough to read though.Any ideas?

That would explain it,but are they strong enough to wear down the rim and imprint letters on it?

It doesn't "wear-out" the rim the rim gets squeezed when it is pressed into the medal. Sometimes there is lettering stamped around the medal and parts of that stamping gets onto the coin.http://www.ebay.com/itm/CAPTAIN-STA...em43c2aa733c

They become "un"lucky cents when they are removed as they are now damaged coins. Best to leave them in the holders.
