This coin was given to me from a diver in Mexico as a gift. I have been trying to identify what I could on the coin and have come up with a Pillar and Waves cob coin perhaps dated between 1652 and 1773. I believe in the tic tac toe arrangement I can see the P in the lower right, some of the middle line ?LV ? TRA, and possibly an E in the upper right and lower left. The waves appear to come up under the squares so I thought the P was correct. It was a present and am not as interested in the value as I am verification. It weighs only 18.8 grams which would be way to light unless the thinness of the coin around the edges could have some loss of silver. What does anyone out there think? Thank you... MIKE

My guess would be Philip IV, 1666, Potosi Bolivia eight reales, assayer "E." The little "R" of VLTRA" appears above and to the right of the "P" and the last date digit appears to be a "6." The reverse has a light and thin cross off center. It is light by about a third of its issue weight, having been washed in the surf for three hundred years. It could well be real. Condition is poor leaving little numismatic premium on the table. If you know the wreck it came from the historic provenance would provide some value. Similar to a goodly portion of what typically is recovered from shipwrecks, I have seen divers melt these down for jewelers to use in making keepsakes of specific wrecks.

Thank you very much Pistareen for your information. It is nice to see that I am not the only one with a mind toward finding detail in places where it is so hard to decipher due to wear and tear. I have numerous publications on Cob coins and all is in order with this coin as far as I can see at this time and with your help. MIKE
