So I was coin roll hunting here in Canada for some nickels and I happen to have gotten one of these 20 Swiss rappen from 2008. Just wondering if this strike is a proof strike or just a heavy cameo. I have trouble telling the difference sometimes.

Thanks

Hi Paulsz - I think this is just a heavy cameo. Swiss coins are struck to a very high standard, and circulating coins in AU and MS often display prooflike characteristics.

I got a 20 rappen out of a dealers box two days ago from the 1970's. It had to be like ms 68 for .20 cents. It looked so perfect.

I would collect them, I love the obverse but find the reverse boring.

It's NOT a proof.
The striking surface of the dies have either been chrome plated or have been nitrided to greatly extend die life.

I have seen lots of copper nickel newly issued for circulation coins in Australia with semi mirror fields. It is common to find well struck coins with excellent detail and semi mirror fields.
