I've seen several mentions of coins that are extremely hard to obtain in circulated grades (Elgin, Spanish Trail, York etc.).

Just wondering, what would stop a wealthy collector from buying an MS example of one of these coins and wearing it down as a pocket piece?

Not likely.
Most people who love coins grit their teeth when the possibility of deliberate damage to them arises.
If the most common grade for a particular issue is MS63, then so be it. In this case, you won't make it more valuable by wearing it down to a rarer grade.

If cost is not in question, what would you prefer:
A 'common' Spanish Trail in MS63, or a 'rare' Spanish Trail in F12?

Really, nothing is stopping them. It is a choice, they either do it or they do not. It depends on what they want more.

It all depends on outlook. Some, like our lowball collectors here, would rather have the F12 (if not lower). It would also be preferred that the coin honestly circulated to its worn state.

I'm about to start on a lowball 7070 because it's less cost-prohibitive than one with really nice coins. I think worn coins have a lot of character: They had a long tough life in circulation and deserve to be set aside. No two circulated coins are exactly the same, while a blast-white MS65 may not even look all that different from a 5x more expensive MS67.

Now I wouldn't take an old rare commemorative to wear down. At least, not an uncirculated one. Maybe a circulated coin, especially with problems. I have modern pocket pieces to wear them down; it's interesting to see how they wear.

Nothing is stopping anyone from creating a pocket piece lowball ... if they have the patience and time to do so.

Some of the truly rare circulated commemorative have likely come to us as pocket pieces ... coins carried for reasons unknown today but enjoyed by the original owners many years ago.

I likely have a few in my set ... and consider them honest coins considering their provenance of many years ago and no 'ill-intent' to fabricate a modern rarity.

One such likely pocket piece example ... in my lowball set.

1925-S California Diamond Jubilee Half Dollar - PCGS G04

A-Question-For-The-Lowball-Commem-People...

I enjoy as well the truly rare honestly circulated examples ... coins which have achieved their lovely state in service of our nations commerce.

Tremendous example in my set ...

1936 Elgin (Illinois) Centennial Half Dollar - PCGS G04

A-Question-For-The-Lowball-Commem-People...

Such is the nature of lowball collecting ... each to their own aesthetic.

"If cost is not an option which would you prefer a common MS63 or a F12 Spanish Trail?" I'll be willing to bet that "if" an F12 Spanish Trail showed up on ebay that it would go for more than the MS63 and that there would be more bidders for it than the 63.
