The following is a press release from the ANAThe public can receive a free, educational appraisal on up to three coins or other numismatic items during the final day of the 2015 National Money ShowSM, held March 5-7 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. Admission to the National Money Show is free for everyone on Saturday, March 7.
"The goal of our Free Appraisal Area is to give the public an opportunity to learn more about the value of the coins, paper money, tokens or medals they may have picked up over the years or received in an inheritance," explained Kimberly Kiick, executive director of the non-profit American Numismatic Association, host of the National Money Show.
The Free Appraisal area will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Halls D-E. These informal appraisals are conducted by knowledgeable
ANA members based on published market estimates, such as The Guidebook to
United States coins.
During the 2014 National Money Show in Atlanta,
ANA Vice President Jeff Garrett informed a collector that she was the proud owner of a coin that he estimated was worth between $15,000 and $20,000.
"It was a 1907 Saint-Gaudens high relief double eagle," Garrett said. "It was one of the first coins I saw that day. The lady who brought it in was surprised that it was worth that kind of money. And she wanted advice on what she should do with it."
Because of the coin's high value, Garrett advised the owner to have her double eagle graded by NGC, the
ANA's official grading company. Garrett said the coin graded as MS-63.
"That's valuable advice that we can offer in the Free Appraisals Area: Whether or not a coin has enough value to justify the expense of having it graded," Garrett said. "And once they get their informal appraisal, there's a bourse floor full of dealers who can buy it, or the owner can consign it with the show's official auctioneer."
"If you own a numismatic item and are not sure what to do with it, the Free Appraisal Area is a no-cost, no-obligation opportunity to speak to someone knowledgeable who can offer good insights that will help you learn about the value, rarity and condition of your collectible," Kiick said.
The Portland National Money Show features more than 500 numismatic dealers with extensive inventories; the
ANA Museum Showcase, exhibiting some of the world's most valuable and beautiful coins and paper money; the Collector Exhibits area; and a wide range of educational presentations and seminars. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, and Friday, March 6; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 7.
