The following is an article excerpt from Coinweek

On this Valentines Day, 2015, we figure we'd add in a numismatic twist. Love tokens are generally defined as coins where one side (or sometimes both sides) has been smoothed down and engraved with initials, names, phrases and/or scenes. These were often given to young ladies as "tokens of love" by suitors.

The manufacture and practice of giving "Love Tokens" seems to have originated in Great Britain in the early 1800's, and then migrated to the United States in the mid- to late-1800's.

I am actually working on a date set of these on Seated dimes. It's been fun so far. I'm having difficulty with ideas of how to site and display it though. It's just in 2x2 s now. All the rest of my sets are in danscos which I like more.

The thing about a year set is trying to find those civil way years fines turned into love tokens is a challenge.

Love Tokens often commemorate "hatches," "matches," "dispatches," and to this list I'll add "detaches," "disbursements," and "drafts." By these tags we mean births, marriages, deaths, partings (of the sweet sorrow kind), gifts, and military service (by choice or otherwise), all of which may precipitate a keepsake for those left behind to remember those who have gone on ahead. Here is one of my favorites on an old English half penny engraved at the dawn of the age of manned aeronautics. Does anyone know who these lovebirds were? It is obvious the match was one made on Earth but which we hope ascended heavenward as the figure implies.
