I've been selling some raw coins on ebay and they haven't been doing too well. The coins are from a collection inherited from my father...some of the coins have paper holders accompanying the plastic flips, and the paper lists a grade from the original auction where my father purchased the coin. I have been including pics of this paper with grade, but do you think I shouldn't? Should I just take detailed pics of the coin and let the buyer make an unbiased judgment on grade? There are also some coins that are enclosed in stapled paper holders (with a grade listed on them). Should I take the coins out for the purposes of taking photographs and selling? Should I just sell the coin by itself in a new mylar flip? Or should I keep the coin in the original paper holder? Should I not show pics of the paper flip with grade in my ebay auctions? I want to be up front and honest with the sale, but I also want to make sure I sell them in the smartest way. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Could you show us a link to one of the coins so we could review before responding?

Sure, here are two of them: http://www.ebay.com/itm/11159336061....m1561.l2649http://www.ebay.com/itm/11159241806....m1561.l2649I was OK with how the Dime did, but I expected the Nickel to do better. I think one issue was that I accidentally had the auctions end during that SNL special on Sunday...might have been an issue I'm not sure. In general, going forward, I'm just wondering what would be the best idea. By the way, I realized after those auctions that I'm not supposed to actually state the grade, so I've taken that out of my future raw coin listings.

Those listings actually look pretty good, sometimes things just go fairly low...

Unless the auction was a big-name house or a well known collector, it won't add much. If it were, it's key provenance... Is anything on the back of the card?

Quote: Is anything on the back of the card? Many of the coins were purchased at Liberty Tree Auctions, so sometimes that is mentioned. Also, sometimes there are notes from my father on what he paid and what he thought the coins were worth. Quote: it won't add much OK, I was worried it might have some negative psychological effect...maybe I'm overthinking this a little. ;)

They look pretty good to me too. Yes, numeric grades are a no-no but go ahead with MS, AU, XF, etc. Perhaps adding a positive note in the title of your nicer coins about the color, toning, luster or eye appeal might help. This auction should have MS, BU, Uncirculated, Mint State or something like that in the title. It should also say great luster or blast white or something catchy. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1878-S-Morg...em19fbe49f92Best of Luck!

That nickel went for about a third of its' value - that one should probably have been in a slab. Be more enthusiastic in titles and descriptions. Don't leave room for free characters in the title. For the Nickel, the word "Head" is redundant and you can use that space for a term complimenting the coin. Come up with a stock paragraph describing your father's activities and include it in every description with the fact that these coins haven't been on the market in decades. You're correct in thinking about ending times. I usually end about 10-11PM Eastern (so also in primetime post-dinner on the West Coast), usually Sunday but any day aside Friday & Saturday nights when people go out is Ok. I also think about holidays and typical school vacations. And none of that is a guarantee of good sales. ebay is a gamble. You may want to consider larger starting bids or Reserves, although both generally lessen bids.

Thanks for the recommendations. Quote: Yes, numeric grades are a no-no but go ahead with MS, AU, XF, etc. OK, thanks...I wasn't sure if even the non-numeric grades were allowed. I have a Barber quarter for sale now that has packaging saying "AU 50", but folks on coincommunity who saw pics gave it a lower grade. Should I still have put "AU" in the title? It's too late for that one I guess as ebay won't let me edit the titles now. Quote: This auction should have MS, BU, Uncirculated, Mint State or something like that in the title. Again, I didn't realize I could say MS, but I figured Prooflike got that idea across. It's too late to edit that title unfortunately. I am a bit hesistant in general saying something about luster or other characteristics since I don't really know what I'm talking about and didn't want it to read as pure salesperson speak. I guess once I get feedback on the forum about a specific coin I can feel more confident about adding these kind of terms. Quote: I usually end about 10-11PM Eastern I had been ending a bit earlier...around 9pm Eastern, but I guess dinner could be a factor. I didn't want it to end too late on the east coast, figuring most people are not night owls like me. Certainly something to consider.
