My Daughter is getting married this summer and I thought that for a wedding gift I would give Them a gold coin.Since I am new to this 'hobby',and don't know all of the tricks of the trade, that I should start researching before actually putting money down and buying a coin.

I have been looking through some of the sites at different coins and their pricing trying to get feel for what would be ,not only a good deal, but a good investment for Them,if and/or,when They go to sell.

My first question is...what's with the different labels?
Blue label, brown label,or flag label?Do they come from different mints? Is one or the other a better investment as far as resale goes?

I still have a few months before the 'big day' arrives.
I was thinking that I would get a half oz coin for Them.I will be starting a new job in about a week and if things go well I might be able to afford even a whole one oz coin.

If you were to give a coin, what one would you give/buy?Would it be better to buy a bullion type or one that has more of a numismatic value?
I'm not rich by any means, but I do want to get one that will remind them of the Wife and I.

Would it be better to buy from the LCS for My first coin, or from one of the big companies?

Thank you for any help/opinion.

Since you don't state if your daughter or her future husband are interested in coin collecting, the best bet would be to purchase a gold coin with not much premium above bullion value. Either one coin from the current year (the year of their wedding) or two (smaller ones?), one each from their respective years of birth.
So their would be a symbolic value in it but also a material one (in case they want to convert it to money). For the best advice what coin to buy, you might want to go to the 'US modern' forum - I suspect getting a US coin would be preferable to a foreign coin for this occasion (there are off course other world gold coins around).

Sounds like you really want to buy yourself a gold coin It's really not a good investment, but it would be a nice gift. Two companies come to mind Provident Metals and APMEX. You can browse their sites and get a good feel for what's out there. Both reputable companies. Maybe buy yourself the coin, and give them cash Only kidding.

You might wanna wait til maybe the week of to buy.... (I've been engaged twice), but I'm joking with you. That being said, I've bought and sold gold coins, 1 oz, 1/4, and of course 1/10 oz... American Eagle you can't go wrong with, but you're going to be paying a premium on the gold, that they won't get if they sell it. If you want gold, buy a Pamp Suisse bar (spelling might be off, but so am I) Those cost near spot and look pretty cool as well. I ALWAYS bought my gold online, silver I buy locally, but for gold, these guys where I live want too much for it. Another cool coin also might be the proof 1/4 oz gold eagle. Comes in a nice box, and case... I have one in my collection. The coin I really liked, although it was silver was the big old American Eagle (I don't believe these are minted by the US mint) but mine was either 6 or 8 oz, and came in a plastic cap along with a blue box and stuff... just really cool to display. But stay away from your "rabbit series" or your "alligator year"... BUY AS CLOSE TO SPOT AS YOU CAN, UNLESS YOU ARE COLLECTING... It makes no sense to pay a higher premium for their present if they are collecting it and possibly will sell it, they don't get that premium when it comes to sell... my 10 cents worth.

For this occasion I would be looking to give a Modern gold piece dated 2015 for the year their life together started. Another possibility would be a 1915-dated Eagle or Double Eagle. Work with us on finding the right price for you, when you choose the coin. Chances are we can find something worthy in gold for any budget over $250 or so.

Her future Husband does/is into coin collecting, but, the job He has doesn't allow Him to participate in a meaningful way.
My GrandDaughter,at a year and a half, is the one who really enjoys coins when I bring them out to look at.And She will let Me know that I HAVE to share when I do. At night She crawls up on My lap and insist that I read Her the Red Book.

I like the idea of getting one in the year of the marriage .Rather than the years They were born.It goes along the line of two [or the three] becoming one, better.IMO

This is true.Once I have the 'gift' taken care of I can concentrate on the one I would really like to get.Which is a one oz buffalo.I like the look of it,because it looks like the old nickel. So I am asking in both cases.
I checked out APMEX this morning and I will go looking through Provident Metals now. Thanks!

At the moment My budget is $700,but with a new job in the works, given a couple of months, that could double. We'll have to see what happens.I am in no hurry and I want to get the nicest gift I can given She is My only Daughter and I'm only doing this, this one time.

I would like to get one in a nice case if possible. But it wouldn't have to be.
The way My Daughter is She wouldn't allow it to be sold unless circumstances demanded it.I'm sure.

Now there is a photo of a young lady that will be selling coins at a coin show in the near future.
As to a coin for a wedding gift. Not sure that is a good idea. If you could find one with the year on it of their wedding, maybe. Otherwise it they are not into coin collecting, might be a waste. They may not even want one. And then what would you do for each anniversary? Trouble with a coin for a wedding is it will just get put away and that is that. And if not a coin collector, possibly just sold someday.
Not to discourage you from a coin but why not a Gold or Silver charm bracelet with a wedding type charm on it. Then you could give them a new charm for each anniversary, baby's birth, Holidays, etc. Could start a tradition.

Very Good idea just carl!I will have to give it some extra thought.Although,I think They know if I purchased a coin, that I didn't do it on a whim, and that it was for a 'special event'. Not to be expected on a regular basis.

as an engaged coin collector while id love a gold coin from my dad at the wedding id certainly prefer cash. if they are very financially sound then it would be a good gift I think.

however I wouldnt stick to a single half oz or 1 oz coin. id go with either a 1/4 oz gold for groom and 1/4 oz platinum for bride or half oz's with the marriage year.

since gold and platinum are so close in price and periodically go higher than the other itd give them something to argue about: who's is worth more lol

only coin in my collection I will not sell is the 1989 ASE given to my parents as a gift when I was born.

EDIT: after doing some research the platinum eagles have not released yet this year and the date is still TBA? seems they are trying to find a new design and it could be after the wedding; however some of the choices are amazing: http://mintnewsblog.com/2014/10/201...-candidates/

Have you bought her a 'baby set' for her birth year? Not sure if any other mint does it, but the Perth Mint issues a variety of 'baby sets'.

I'm sure They would prefer cash over a coin as well. But,IMO it is way too easy to spend cash and IMO it would probably 'burn a hole' in Their pocket. At least with a single coin They would have to decide together,on when/how/if need be,of the need to cash it in.
Besides the fact,We,the Wife and I,have been helping Them out and will continue to do so as needed.
I would also like to instill in Them that They need to look towards the future and make Their Own investments.
I think it will be hard enough starting out for Them. I don't need to ad fuel to any arguments.

I do like the #9 design platinum coin.I may have to get that one for Myself.

I have always heard that a person enjoys Their Grandkids more than Their own.Now that I am a GrandFather I believe there maybe something to it.She is such a joy.

Not yet.She hasn't learn how to talk yet, just a few words here and there. So I think I have a little bit of time before She starts to think about, and demanding, her own collection.lol I will look more into it when things settle down after the wedding in the latter part July.

Does an older coin carry a higher premium than a newer coin?

Yes, in most cases. Depends on the grade. The lower the grade of the coin, the closer to spot it becomes worth. Cleaned coins are also closer to spot.

Gold is a very popular wedding gift in certain cultures, and to be quite honest, you can't go wrong with it. If you want to give something that will grow in value, what are you really left with anymore? Stocks? Bonds? CD's? (sure, you cannot exactly "gift" CD's, but you can do something close enough) CD's, though, have low interest rates, bonds aren't any better (savings bonds reach maturity now after around 20 years and have very poor interest rates as well), stocks...well, look at the stock market. Metal, on the other hand, while the prices have fallen in recent years, since it is used industrially, no matter what happens in the world (short of complete apocalypse) it will always be worth something.

As far as platinum (or palladium, for that matter), the number of places available for anyone to liquidate it, when/if the time comes becomes few, compared to silver or gold. However, that doesn't mean it's a bad idea, you just need to remember that. (Only one "we buy gold" store around me buys platinum that I'm aware of, and none buy palladium)

Wow ........ lots and lots of opinions. I think what you have thought if is a great gift for their future. It is thoughtful and despite what all the naysayers are saying, it is both a keepsake and an investment in their future.
They won't be able to spend it frivolously like cash. They will have to stash it. It will always be their nest egg, their super emergency fund, their plan B. And like you said, you are assisting them with the day to day stuff so giving them an investment towards their future instead of cash is perfect.
I would get a 2015 AGE or Buffalo. Foreign gold is beautiful but nothing says " the American Dream" like an American Gold coin. Keep an eye open for a spot + sale at APMEX, JM or Provident.

I have been scratching my head trying to remember who your granddaughter reminded me of, then it dawned on me. That looks exactly like me, looking at my coin collection

I think that if you can swing it, a 2015 AGE is perfect. The eagle design is timeless and beautiful, the gold content may fluctuate, but it will always be valuable.
