I'm looking for opinions from the experts on this strange Buffalo nickel I found. What is going on with the areas around the rim? It doesn't look like they were filed down. An interesting thing to note is that the areas in question have corresponding "weakness" on the opposite side, so I'm thinking worn down Cuds. Thoughts?
From fist glance I would lean toward the side of circulation/PMD Buffs are notoriously soft, and are hard to get in higher grades. I am not an expert, I am sure others will have more ideas.
It got hit on both sides simultaneously, denting them in. You can see both dents. The coin then circulated, wearing down the metal which was pushed up by the incident.
The other thing is, if you see that wear pattern without corresponding "dents," it's likely bent, or was bent at one point. That would have been my thinking had the dents not been there.
