My personal opinion is that the "official" mint figures by year is often way off base. I think that many of the mintage figures given for a given year include numbers from the previous year as well. Maybe the mint's "mintage year" doesn't follow the same as a calendar year. Lokk at the Canada 1 cent figures for 1889 (should be zero) and also 1892, 1895 & 1897. Many of the years also list 2 figures, in addition to those mentioned at the end of the article.
Just like the well-publicized 1859 mintage for the 1 cent of 10 million .. many of those (maybe 1/2 million)were 1858's as shown and nearly proven in Rob Turner's first book. There is no way that there were only 421,000 1858 cents made, when you can walk any bourse in nearly any city and find 15-20. And that doesn't count the ones already in collections.

I would love to see a compilation table like that for the Royal Canadian Mint, for dies produced and used in Ottawa, right up to 1976 (before the Winnipeg plant opened). I noticed that there were two mintage figures for a few of the years also. Yes I think you are right okiecoiner, especially since the article says "However, it does not necessarily imply that all coins struck during a certain year actually bore that year's date". Looking at the Canada 1886 10 cent coin for example, coins and Canada says the mintage is 800,000 but the article shows only 480,000 10 cent coins struck that year. But in 1887 they struck 830,000 10 cent coins but coins and Canada only lists 350,000 mintage for 1887. Therefore probably half of the 1886 ten cent coins were actually minted in 1887.

My library has a book on the history of silver dollars (only up to 1959, it's an old book). In the appendix it is listed the fineness (interesting how it changes from year to year), provincial distribution, die usage, mintage, and space date variations (the last one by Jack Griffin).

 with SPP-Ottawa. I would be very interested in knowing the number of dies used by the RCM, especially for KG V 5 cents 1922-1936. If someone has this info or a reference, please share. |

Looking at a few pages, it's the exact same book, just that that one's online. It's Gilmore Starr's Canadian Silver Dollars. The book's got bigger pictures, though.

I was glad to see how the replies went here as I too found with different sources different mintage numbers. Okie I agree with you totally as there was a thread not so long ago on a Vick ten cent where the consensus was a roll over of numbers from the previous year creating a shortage of the first here mentioned. Also for eg;I believe it's the 1874 and 1875 ten cent were combined in mint totals and that's why CandC doe's not display mintage for the 1875 as the breakdown is not truly known.
