Are there any diagnostics on a 1909s Wheat penny to tell it from any other year. I have one with the place for the 0 being damaged, there is little chance that it was an attempt to fool anyone since I have had this penny since the 60's, so, any way to tell

woodcr, can you post a picture? There may be ways to distinguish but certainly a picture will help determine authenticity if that's what you're asking.

Are you saying that the place holder where the zero would be is gone?

Can you see the initials VDB on the Obverse under Lincoln's shoulder?

Unless it's an 'S' VDB, they didn't have initials after removing them from the Rev until 1918 I think.

Someone else will be along who knows more then I though.

it is an s, not s vdb, where the 0 or whatever was it looks like nothing was there but there looks like it took a hit

So there are NO initials front or back? Is that what your saying?

Too bad you don't have a picture.

there are no designer initials reverse or obverse, the hit does look like it was an 0 that was struck, I had forgotten how small that 0 was on a 1909

If there are no initials on the shoulder it has to be 1909. The initials were there by 1919.

so, this coin has sat in my bulk wheat pennies that I started collecting in 1960 out of change and it could be a 1909s, amazing, I will have to look at my 50 1955 pennies all over again, thanks
