if it helps any, in hand, it has a great cartwheel luster... not usually there with a harsh cleaning, right?

I do see luster but it is closer to the devices where the surface was protected from cleaning.

Dollars don't have a shiny finish between 1935 and 1939 because the dies used were not chromed.

Nice coin but harshly cleaned. If it wasn't, it would probably grade as MS
My favourite Silver Dollar obverse. (see avatar)

Hi stamp virgin guy,

Here is a pretty good info about how the cartwheel effect it does happens:

http://coins.about.com/od/caringfor...ny_coins.htm

What you are probably see on your coin being the shiny part is that it has been polish up when it was cleaned which makes it shiny a bit more - but the problem with that also is that they rub it with something abrasive type cloth or even the spinning wheel which leave all of those ugly lines into the surface of the coin.

It makes me mad when they ruin the coin like this but most important for the newcomer is not to be attract to the shiny object so much but at the surface look more closely :)

It's never too late to learn.

Glad to hear you picked up a much nicer one.

But keep the first one and use it as a good example of a coin that has been strongly cleaned.
