I really wasn't in the market to purchase acquire anything Greek, but like always when something irresistible presents itself and I can get it in expensively then I have to get it. I feel like I am doing the numismatic community a disservice by not getting it. I saw this coin listed by a dealer I have done business with before, who cares some ancients but mostly World coins. I always check his listings for something good, that might be less appreciate by his usual client base.

Well this is what I got.

Attica, Athens
AR Tetradrachm (BC 454-431)
24.5 mm x 17.07 grams
Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena with Archaic style eye.
Reverse: Owl Standing Facing Olive branch, moon in left field. Greek Legend A TH E in right field.
Ref: Classic Owl Type A
Note: Horn Silver, 2 x Ancient Test Cut

Nice one AN. Good to hear you got it inexpensively since, obviously those Athena/Owl tets can get pricey.

I really like the rationalization ("I feel like I am doing the numismatic community a disservice by not getting it.") I may try to use that next time my wife expresses displeasure at my coin purchases. I've already exhausted the "it's an investment" line...she's not going for that one anymore.

beautiful coin! doing some research on one of my roman coins kinda scarred my from buying another ancient coin, it seemed like there were a ton of fakes out there. even "artists" who reproduce them as art

It's not just ancient coins. There are plenty of forgeries for every collecting field, for US, modern World, bullion, etc. And like with other types of coins, time and effort must be devoted to educate yourself on how to distinguish what is real and what is not real.

Really nice, I love owls, and if you can get them at a bargain price so much the better.

thats not what I meant its more of the type of coins that are hammer struck and the edges cut till it is appropriate weight like cobs. which makes it harder to compare them to confirmed authintics. theres alot less data available on older coins like these and as such makes me think authenticity on ancient coins may be more subjective than objective. thats just my Two Cents though

I am no expert and have only been collecting for a couple of years, but mostly the coins that have been clipped, are post production. Siliqua are a prime example. The slivers probably used as small change.
