Curious what your thoughts are on this one, I need a little reassurance before bidding. If the price doesn't go up anymore I was considering bumping up to $400 + buyers premium. I don't think the alleged scratches are bad at all. Really no worse than on any of these coins. Thoughts?

Personally, I've never minded owning a scratched coin, especially if it's a rare date. At AG3, those scratches wouldn't bother me a bit. It's a very nice coin, that will go for quite a bit lower than what a problem-free example would sell for. So if you've got the money, then I say go for it! (and tell us if you win).

I bid $400 and that bumped the total with insurance to $460 + shipping. Someone had already bid that, and I wasn't willing to pay $500, so I let it go. The search continues....

Thunder,

I personally have a mental block against buying "problem" coins. But if you don't, many (barely noticeable) problem coins can be had at a great price. If it's only about eye appeal the money savings is well worth it.

For collect ability and resale, IF it's within your budget I recommend a problem free. The nice thing about low grade Mercs is they tend to tone dark in the crevices of the details, which brings out the design.

Here's a no reserve, low starting bid example on ebay. It also ends on a weekday. You might get lucky.

This one ends on a Monday while many people will still be at work. But it seems like it already has a fair amount of bidders.

If your budget is limited, HERE is a nice problem free alternative! IMO it has really nice detail for a FR-2, but it looks like some faint scratches might be the reason for the grade?

I haven't check closed FR-2 prices on Heritage, but here's one with BIN

For one thing be real carefull with buying that coin not graded and slabbed by a noted TPG service. One of the more popular counterfeited coins. Also, note with 264,000 minted and probably even more fakes out there, way to easy to buy one that is not real. Even many dealers have been fooled by the better fakes.
As always, I suggest if you can find a coin show, go there. Less chance in getting ripped off. Note at a coin show if you buy one you can usually ask many other dealers if it is real.

Thanks for the links Paratrooper, I do my share of ebay browsing, and a couple of those look alright to me. Just Carl, I have no intention of buying a 16-D that isn't authenticated by one of the top 4 TPG's. Even though my opinion of TPG's is changing, (I don't really need their opinion for whether or not a coin is MS-62 or 63), I do think that they are very helpful for authentication purposes.

The coin show is always an idea, although the last one I went to, I found the 16-D's to be hard to find and the ones available were overgraded and overpriced (probably a factor of not many dealers having any).

I've found that you must go to a lot of coin shows where the same or mostly the same dealers are. As they get to know you they lower their prices fantastically. No reason to give great breaks to someone you may never see again but if you look like a steady customer, you'ld be surprized at what you can get. I've already received free coins, free albums, great discounts due to being at lots of coin shows. If they know you they can actually go out looking for coins for you. That is why I always stress coin shows.
