Normally I just go through a whole box without stopping, but this one has been a bit slower. I've gone through 25 of 50 rolls so far and pulled 71 pre-1960 nickels. They have mostly all been circulated pretty heavily, but I've never seen close to this many in a whole box, let alone half. Have any of you guys seen anything like this? I'm thinking maybe a collection dump somehow got grouped into 1 box, but who knows. No buffalo,V's, or silvers yet. I'll update with the full breakdown when I finish the whole box.

I picked up CWR once, perhaps $20 worth where there were two solid rolls of pre-60s nickels by themselves. I figure I got a dump only nothing of real value in the mix. May your luck be better!

Ok, finally finished the entire box. Man that was a lot of stop and go. I thought I had done the better half to start, but I was dead wrong. In total I pulled 209 Pre-1960's. Some of the ones I found were very disproportional to what I would have expected. Also, no silver or buffalos. The 38, 42D, 47S, 49S, 50, 53S, 55, & 58 were hole fillers for me in my 1938-1961 Whitman folder after going through 5 boxes. Here is the breakdown below:
38: P-1 D-0 S-0 39: P-8 D-0 S-0 40: P-9 D-0 S-4 41: P-10 D-3 S-4 42: P-4 D-1 42-45 Silver: 0 46: P-11 D-2 S-3 47: P-6 D-1 S-5 48: P-4 D-2 S-0 49: P-3 D-4 S-1 50: P-2 D-0 51: P-3 D-4 S-0 52: P-5 D-4 S-5 53: P-2 D-5 S-3 54: P-7 D-0 S-5 55: P-2 D-10 56: P-5 D-5 57: P-4 D-9 58: P-1 D-13 59: P-2 D-13

That is possible it was a large collection dumped and you got part of it. I'm lucky to get 30 a box.

That is a good find. Congrats. You may want tot try and buy up as many other boxes of nickels as that bank will sell you ASAP. That may continue
To answer your question, if you look back several months or more, I found a bag that was loaded with pre-60 nickels to the order of a couple hundred or so - similar to yours.

Nice score! I'm hoping to find a box like that someday, I think the best I've done is 30 or so pre-60's from one box.

Yeah, I'm planning to go to that same bank and pick up a fe more boxes this week wehen I have time. Luckily they are not a huge bank, so that may be working in my favor. The other funny part to this find was I had also picked up a box of cents and only found 3 wheats (51D, 57D, and 58D) which is pretty sad. The nickels made up for that though :)

Are you guys hoarding the pre-60 cents or selling them? Just wondering

I find about 5 per box so I'm hoarding 100% of them.

Smeyers, I have a good guess on the box. It was probably dumped by another CRHer. You said they are well circulated. Based on your list about, They appear to be the more common 38 to 59 nickels. I used to save every nickel pre-60. Eventually I had a few thousand coins and most had little or no premium. I sorted by condition and rarity. I did a mass dump on the lower value coins.
That said, it's still a nice find, especially if you don't have a bunch of these nickels. Congrats.

Owassokie, that did cross my mind, and it is very possible that is really what happened. Especially considering I didn't find any key dates or silvers. The only other thing I noticed was a high number of 1972 and 1974 BU nickels.

I found a similar dump a few years ago, but it was all in a few CWRs, so I didn't have to search the whole box. Just like yours, there was a good date spread, but no coin was worth more than ~10-15 cents.
How many holes did this fill for you? You have a good date spread and '49-S and '50 are both semi-keys.

I've only done about 6 boxes after this one and I filled 8 holes, so that was pretty cool. I'm only missing the 38D, 38S, 39D, 48S, 50D, 51S and the D and S mint silvers.

Wow ... amazing box indeed. I have never gotten even close to 209 pre-60's Jefferson from a single box ... I average about 26 and my all-time best would be on the order of 100. Concur with the suspicion that you just searched a collectors 'return to the wild' event. Best of wishes with completing the remaining Jefferson ... the set can be achieved through rolls with some patience. David

I just went through 1/3 of all of the pre 1960 nickels I had been saving as I had $300 worth piling up. Out of $100 or sos worth over 70% were 1956-1959. I threw them in a bag to dump on the next bank run.
Same with NIFC halves. They are neat when you find them but then after a while you realize they aren't worth anything and are just taking up space and bankroll.
