I was wondering how really rare is it even in low grade? Does it come available for buying often? How many are known?
Thank you

Really rare to see in the wild------I saw one in VG8 about 1 year ago on ebay, listing was 10 minutes old and before I could click on it, it was gone--Buy now option. That was the only one I ever saw in 3 years of hunting----I hunt in about 8 different auction houses.

ICCS population report lists 32 in total ----only 8 EF or better---only 2 MS
The variety is called 8 over 5.

lambecolin on my new slab it says First 8/5. I got mine from a small lot. It was very worn but I thought it was 8 over 5 ;), and indeed it is.
For those who wonder, it is AG-3 and you will find it on ebay within a month.
How come ICCS reported that variety when they don't for the penny 1929 high 9?
I wanted also to know if the price in the books were acurate? Thanks

They are rare and rather pricy.
I suspect I have the largest certified hoard known.

Charlton lists AG3 at $370----Personally I would not entertain anything less than $1000.
AU50 lists at $7000 ---I guess MS coins $20,000

The 1858 8/5 is the rarest 10c Victorian Variety.

The population is probably less than 50.

You can find 2 or 3 on ebay annually, there was a G4 in a group of silver recently on ebay in the past month, I missed the auction, hopefully the high bidder spotted it.

They are very very difficult to cherry pick on ebay.

Here is my "precious".

As far as the 1929 high 9 cent is concerned, I suspect that the grading services are nervous about the rumor one sometimes hears that there are more than two positions of the 9. If that is true, the importance of the high 9 could be called into question.

The 1896 far 6 cent "variety" bit the dust because of something similar. There were too many dies with the 6 in between the standard "near" position and the "far" position.

"Hoard" of them? How many you are talking about colonialtokens. (Someone will need to tell me how do we quote)

lambecolin, thanks for that, in my 2015 Charlton there are no price for AG-3, did you just split in two the price of G?

canadian-varieties, wow that's a nice one you got there.
Was it from welike2buyandsell that you saw it on ebay, I think it may just be mine.

JHax, I am certain that for 1929 they are at least 3 positions that can be somewhat easily seen. In numicanada we call them the high 9, the low 9 and the intermediate 9(this one is so often seen as high 9 on ebay and sold as such(sorry for the buyers)).

Boro...yes...i was intending to bid on that group, but my kids must have distracted me, because I ended up missing the auction :).
Congratulations!

A year or two ago, there was a lovely 1858/1558 10c on ebay, raw, grading VF30, being sold by a guy from Romania who was asking for $3000 cash / money transfer.
As tempting as that was, I couldn't bring myself to send $3000 to Romania!

Lucky me you didn't win it. But I must admit my bid was much higher that the winning bid. Also even it turned out that it wasn't a real 1858 5/8(I am a novice for spotting these still(I did know it was after I got my charlton and read the A of Canada was doubled so my only hint was the little horn from the 8)) I would have been fine with it because of the other dimes in the lot.
Thanks your kids for me, mine was long gone to bed :). You must be pacific time? Kids so late?!

Darn Romanian ;)
Any follow up on wether he sold it or not?

He put it on ebay at least 3 times over a 6 month period...but I didn't see it in the past year, so perhaps he succeeded.

very hard to get at VF and above.

Not initially...initially he listed it for $100 or $200 but someone wrote to him, he cancelled the auction, then relisted for $3000.

That makes cherry picking on ebay more difficult, people willing to "spoil the hunt" ;)
