Other then a bank and ebay, what are some ways to purchase rolls of coins to search through in hopes of finding rare coins and varieties? Not talking about buying from collectors.

I sometimes go to the car wash and put $5 in the changer machine to look for ATB and Parks quarters. If I get one or two, I put 5 more dollars in. I have received quite a few that way.

You basically covered all the bases. The only way to get rare coins is to search for them from bank rolls etc, or buy them at fair market value. What specifically are you hoping to get?

I used to do that, too.

I also used to buy stamps with a twenty just to get the dollar coins in change. Then two things happened. They replaced the cash machine with an electronic payment machine and I stopped needing stamps.

If you or your family go to the same stores all the time where they get to know you, ask at the check outs if you could buy a roll of something.

Funny how some of us collectors think! I'd always go to the change making machine adjacent to the vending machines. Put my money in and get 3 quarters and 5 nickels; found many silver nickels for changing out a dollar. Then use incorrect change to make a purchase to generate more change to look at. I never give exact change when making a purchase always hoping to get something back from the cashier, but lately, cashiers keep doing me 'favors' and rounding to the nearest nickel rather than give me 3 or 4 cents. I wonder if they are told to do this?

When you go to the grocery store, bank, or anywhere else that might
harbor one of those "change to cash" machines, always discreetly eye
return cup, and the floor around the machine. The stuff you find on
the floor is likely just spillage, making it common stuff. However,
the stuff you find in the return cup can be very interesting. The
machine spits out anything out of spec. Damaged coins, foreign coins,
or old coins that are out of weight spec due to precious/semi-precious
metal content. Stuff that the machine doesn't like, often equals stuff
that hobbyists like us, DO like!

Oh, and don't be too obvious about this one, because I'm sure
it would creep people out if you were... I look in the till
when I go to a store and make a transaction. I have seen hand
rolled coins before in cash registers that just had that "look",
like it had been rolled a long time ago, or the wrapper was odd
looking. If you have a "feeling" about what you see that brief
moment the till is open, you can ask to buy it from the cashier.

I admit that I haven't found a fortune this way, but I have picked
up rolls that looked old that turned out to be just that. I have
got a few rolls of wheat pennies out of register sightings, old
nickels, and home rolled dimes with silver.

I also have made nice with cashiers before, in places that I frequented,
and eventually they were comfortable enough with me, that they would
save odd stuff for me. Ike dollars, currency with 'other than green'
seals, or anything else that didn't look the same as the normal stuff.
This has been a VERY good source for me in the past.
