I don't oppose new designs on coins, I just oppose the frequency of such changes. From 1932-1998 the Washington quarter has essentially stayed the same, except the bicentennial. When the Statehood Quarters came about, I thought....hmm interesting. Thought is was cool, it just seemed unique at the time. During that period I thought the regular reverse would continue after the Statehood Quarters ended or at least have an all new reverse. But then the territory quarters came along. I thought well, OK I can see that. But by that time I was starting to get bored. Then low and behold, we then got the ATB Quarter program. At that point I was just NOT onboard. It was getting ridiculous. Plus I hated the low relief on the obverse of those coins. Then after a few years...OMG "S" mint quarters were introduced into the series. I was going bonkers at how many different quarters that were being issued. It just became overkill. At this point I am so ready for a regular design. A change up here and there is nice, but these were just too much. And not to mention the huge size and cost of the mint sets. Good gravy!!

Being a modern coin collector from overseas I defiently prefer when coutries have a standard design for their coins. But also, there's no unity in having masses of different designs. It simply becomes an unorganized mess, one is blinded by all the different, flashy designs that are supposed to encourage one to collect. Personally, I liked the original Washington quarter simply because it had the same pattern as the other coins in the American system. I defiently support the longevity of designs, I love when one can get a coin from let's say the 30's that still has the same design 80 years later. That's why I like the swiss coinage. Not much design change, instead a couple of good design that makes a good set of coinage.
In a couple of ways I can see how the US mint is commercializing the coinage. The reason for the State Quarters in the first place was to encourage coin collecting if I can recall correctly. And for those who just want this year's new designs without having to look through their change can just buy them in whatever quality they'd like from the mint, at a significant ramp up. I too hoped for a 'normal' design after the State Quarters program but the only normal design is apparently the obverse. Which I too think looks wrong.
Rest in Peace

I'm on the fence on this one. I enjoy it and I am also frustrated by it. Before I really got interested in collecting, I was assembling a set of circulated State Quarters in a cheap little folder. After I got really interested in collecting, I decided to focus only on ciruclated silver Washingtons. I still pull all the other designs and put them into folders -- just for fun, but I never once considered buying them all.

I guess I would rather have my collection made up of stuff I pulled from circulation and keep the rest of my collection to just a few dozen pretty good coins.

To me it's no different than painting them various colors after striking so you'll buy one of each color, and no more numismatically relevant. They cost more to make - extra design/development - and are only there because collectors will fill their pockets with seignorage to purchase them.

From an artistic standpoint, I actually think the ATB Quarters are some of the best circulating coins this side of the Walker half and Mercury dime. Especially the ones showing landscapes--the detail and eye appeal are just great.

From the standpoint of a collector, it's tiring. I've put together multiple state and territory sets, just because. I told myself that I would treat the ATB Quarters as regular change, but then the first couple years were suddenly key dates, so I got suckered in. I'm in too deep now to just quit.

I am fine with educational designs on our coins. I would prefer a "standard" design on the quarter so that ATB II feels like a fresh start. I just don't see the point in releasing 5-6 designs per year.

Also, does anybody remember this (satirical) article:

That's the nice thing about not collecting clad coinage, the pre-65 designs don't change!

I like them it's always refreshing to chr for quarters because of it. I also thing some of the reverses on the ATB have been stunning. I was never a fan of the State Quarters though I have a set. Especially now they look sorta non professional but that might had been of the design process of having state legislators choose from mostly amateur design contests.

I agree with you, TF. After a while, all these commemorative designs see to add up to a publicity stunt by the mint to get collectors to buy more coins. It's overwhelming and I hope the mint has figured out when it's going to stop.

And here is the flip side.

I love them. I like the variety. A lot of the designs are beautiful ( a few have been duds, but not many) and they make for a stunning display in a Dansco. The same holds for the State Quarters.

Burned out or tired of the variety? Sorry, but I dont get that. Collecting variety is tedious, but collecting the same thing over and over is not? That seems backwards to me.

I would actually prefer a once reverse change a la the Native American dollar. A new variety every year would be enough to keep collectors interested.

I really had high hopes and was excited for the Sac dollars but they went ahead and decided on edge lettering and took the eagle reverse away. That really killed the series for me.
