I was using a mag to pick up some nickels that I dropped from the container I have them stored in and noticed a few were not magnetized I thought they all Canadian 5 cents were mag-- other than silver?

Between 1990 and 1995, they were nickel plated copper (cupro-nickel)
so they would be non magnetic.

Not a expert but I get canadian nickels in us machine bank rolls 60's to the 90's. If they were magnetic they wouldn't make it through the sorters. I don't know when they switched I might have not gotten earlier ones just because they are harder to find. The steel ones stick to the magnet.

Those from 1920 to 81 will be pure nickel or steel & nickel. A magnet will attract to nickel, but not as strong as steel. The war years (42-44) were Tombac and brassy color and won't attract to magnet. '82-2001 were copper nickel with lots of copper and probably not attracted.

Technically the start of the "Nickel" Nickels was 1921 (but the small nickel is silver)

okiecoiner nailed it. There is also some 2006 no P nickels minted in cupronickel, and they are non-magnetic. I haven't found a lot of those.

1982 - 1999 are no mag. 2000 and 2001 come in both. There is a 1998W (Winnipeg) and I believe a 1999P (test token)
