Not sure if this is the right place for this. I just recently decided to collect coins with spiders. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I should start? I'd love to get the Australian Red Back & Funnel Web but they are a bit pricey, especially the Red Back. I saw some coins on ebay that I'll probably buy but wanted to see if you guys could help. I also bought a couple bullion pieces that weren't very much & probably get some other ones. Thanks, Dan

The red back spider, which is a near relative of the American black widow spider, and the funnel web spider, are both quite common in the area where I grew up, in the North Shore suburbs of Sydney.

That's cool. I have a Widow collection going right now. I have two different kinds & will be getting three more when the weather gets better here (Ohio). I'd love to get a Red Back, that would be very cool. I'm trying to get as many different Widows as I can.

I have had much more personal experience with the spiders than the coins ! Not really into NCLT silver; (World and ancients instead) Google 'atrax robustus'. They are large underground dwelling spiders, with a web lined hole at the surface. Our cat used to crap down their holes; the ground around their holes was easier to dig with his paws. Satisfaction for the cat! The venom is highly neuro toxic to primates and humans with highly developed brains, but curiously, not to lower order mammals. I was bitten by a funnel web spider in my late teens, before an anti venene was developed. The spider was collected for confirmation of the species and together taken immediately to hospital. A few people have died from the bite. The spider bit me on a knuckle of my hand; the bite made a tiny but noticeable tattoo at the bite site. I suffered only a tiny amount of nausea. My older brother said that I should not be surprised that I would survive, because I had no brains anyway!

Spider coins in addition to your Japaneses collection? I checked to see if those two areas intersect but I couldn't find a Japanese coin with a spider on it. There is the San Marino's 1975 lira and this thing. https://silvergoldbull.com/1-4-oz-2...-silver-coinPost Script: I am not affiliated with Silver Gold Bull nor do I get a "kick back".

Wow sel_691. That's an incredible story. You were really lucky. Glad you survived. I'll look up the atrax, nasty buggers. Thanks. I have 7 Six Eyed Sand Spider too. They are supposed to be the worse spider of all. 10 times more potent than a Recluse. Harmonica. You're right. The spider coin thing is completely separate from the Japanese coins. I just thought I'd see what I could find & man was I surprised at some of the prices. I've seen the Spider & Web 1/4 oz on ebay. I might be able to get it a little bit less there too. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the link. Even though I really like spiders, I'm not a big fan of Spider-man.

The 2008 Kookaburra features the bird perched on some barbed wire examining a spider's web. You might be able to find one for bullion price at a LCS.

I'll check at the LCS & see if I get lucky but I'm not going to hold my breathe. Last time I was there it was a Gun/Coin shop. I haven't been there in years because their prices were stupid high. Plus it looked like the only had US coins. There are no real coin shops near me. Nope no 2013 Niue Spiderman. Not a big Spiderman fan. :)
