Just wanted to let you all know about a loupe I just bought. I have always wanted (30+ years) a triplet but did not want to shell out the bucks. Well I bit the bullet and got a B&L 14x for just under $27. The size is almost laughable. But I must say that the clarity is better then my $5 one and the B&l is a bit brighter. But for the money the B&L is a bit much. I would like to find a 14x Hastings triplet with a bigger lens though that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I do not recommend anyone get the 20x it must be the size of a grain of rice.

What would you recommend for looking at mintmarks? Would a 14x be sufficient or would the 20x be overkill?
Is the 20x good for anything?

Skip the 20x. Use at least a 12x doublet for errors/varieties. I use a 14x because my eyes are old. If you need more then 14x go with a scope.

Thanks John! Good input.

I have been CRH Lincoln cents for about 2 years. I have only found minor varieties/errors.

I have yet to find any doubled dies.

Do you have any tips for finding DDO DDR? Where should I be getting my resources from (right now it's a local bank). I live in Western Massachusetts.

If you could share some of your successes I would be very grateful.

John, I have been using a 7x b&l since my gold mining failure in AK. Still using it today. lol Trying to get back into CRH but...not into the hunt.
Picked up a bag of wheats from "Don" $25. for 520.Still a lot of fun and some interesting G to VG cents in the teens. (great hole fillers) Also some VF cents in the 40's and 50 and better.
My best prize was a 1 cent 1812 Good . Luv it
This was a special purchase with a great deal from him.

The B&L 7x triplet APO is my go to loupe, I have a few of them. For really close up stuff I use a Panasonic 30x lightscope. They appear on ebay occasionally and there are some knock offs, but I prefer the original one as the lenses seem better quality. Model FF-393E

A small bank near me is where I get my boxes of cents from,10 at a time. Always use a different dump bank. Go to coppercoins.com and study the DDO / DDR and in time you will find some nice coins. I have been in the hunt for 44 years so I am up a bit on your two years. Good luck in your hunt and make sure to post any nice finds.

I've got lots of magnifiers. One like that 14X and that same Panasonic 30X. Also, computer magnifier and lots of different stuff like that accumulated over the years. Oddly enough, only use one in a stand that has about a 5 or 6 Inch glass with about a 3 or 4 X power. And an insert with a possible 6X, not sure. All I think I need. Maybe.
