Hi all,

I'd like your opinions on this coin.

I just received it back from NGC and they tagged it as not genuine. I just do not see that at all. I have measured it. It's correct. I weighed it. It weighs 27g (listed to be 26.9g). I did a silver ring test. Sounds like silver. I compared it to a Morgan dollar. Tone was almost the same. Not exactly, though (which makes sense because this coin is wider and more narrow than a Morgan). I compared it to an AU58 NGC coin I have. Looks the same. Every small detail looks the same. I have already pretty much decided that I'll send it to another coin grading company, unless you guys at CCF have consistently strong opinions to the contrary. I'd say this should possibly come back MS64, maybe 63. The luster through the toning is really, really strong.

So, I guess:
1) does anything about it raise suspicion that it is fake?

2) What do you think it would grade?

Thank you, CCF,
Derek

Sent this item to ICG and it came back MS 64. More like what I thought.

The experts at NGC saw something we are unable to tell from these photos. Maybe a second opinion from a different TPG as already suggested.

I suspect NGC would have a database of such counterfeit coins which they have not released all the information out in the public.

This link is an example: http://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewart...ticleID=2590

Quite scary times.

TPGs like NGC and PCGS usually tend to be very conservative with Chinese coins. It's not too unusual that you end up getting a "not genuine" tag over a genuine coin sometimes. I once had a 1899 Chihli dollar that took me 3 submissions to get it slabbed (I sent it 3 times because I knew very well the coin is 100% authentic), first it got back to me labeled "not genuine" then second time with "altered surface", finally I decided to send it to NCS before sending again to NGC, this time it got back to me slabbed with a details grade, the funny thing I noticed the coin didn't even get conserved at all at NCS before reaching NGC.

Send it back (a few more times) and it will often happen this is how things work there, but of course you do need to know your coins first.
