I think it is from the red flock case that it came, some kind of reaction with the chemicals in the case.

I would say it is not AT, it is NT(natural toning) and kind of UT(ugly toning).
Feel free to call me Will.

Quote: UT(ugly toning). UT it is, but I got it for decently cheap, so I cant complain. The surface looks a lot nicer I hand, but the colours....not so much

Here is a penny from a 1973 Specimen set, it ended up with a nice purple color.

I understand that there may have been something (sulfur) in the packaging that toned the coins, here is a picture of the original packaging. Your toning is nice. And my toned '72

The packaging and the 50/50 Ag/Cu alloy mix leads to a lot interesting, sometimes, spectacular toning on these coins from the early 70's

Some of these tone really nice. Especially on reverse since they generally sit reverse side up in the case. The obverse frequently exhibits a milky dull finish if it spent years in the case without being moved. Definitely not AT. I think toned coins (even the less appealing ones) are much more unique and tell a much more interesting story. I would take the above coin over "blast white" any day.

The penny looks similar to what you would see in a petrie dish in a lab but nice effect, I like NT coins myself and seek them out when hunting. Enjoy
