Why not issue a whole new 1oz silver bullion coin in the USA alongside the ASE? If I recall, Australia has the 1oz Kookaburra and Koala coins, plus that other series with the Saltwater Crocodile. Canada usually does other 1oz bullion coins but more commemorative issues rather than a new series. I think the ASE is just kinda boring. I think a whole new bullion series would put a spark in things.

I only have a few because of that. I would love it if the reversed changed every year.

Not enough silver for one thing. The mint produced 48,000,000 ASEs last year that is 48 mil. ounces of silver. More that the total of all the silver coins issued by Canada and more than all the silver issued by Australia. Then you add in the proofs, the UNC, the commemoratives the silver proof sets and the special edition sets. I think theint struggles just to keep up with just the ASE production.

The production of the ASE should be reduced. 48 million is still absurd for a bullion coin. Should be divided 2 or 3 ways to allow for different coins. It is my understanding that the Maple Leaf and the Kookaburra have much lower mintage numbers.

Quote:The production of the ASE should be reduced. 48 million is still absurd for a bullion coin. That says it all, it is a bullion coin, not originally meant as a collectible or to gain anymore value than the current value of silver. The Silver Eagle legislation calls for it to be minted to demand. The demand is 48 million, so the mintage is 48 mil. That is why there were no ASE proofs or UNC coins minted in 2009, the law requires mint to demand and there was not enough silver that year for the proofs or UNC. To cut back on the bullion Eagle mintage would require a change in the law.

I think the collectability would be enhanced if the mintage was fixed rather than going by consumer demand.

Expect to pay more for a kooky design. ASE does exactly what it's supposed to do, as Mr. Denco has illustrated. I think if you like different designs, American platinum and palladium coins are the way to go. Silver is just too cheap a material to really put much thought behind the designs, that's just how it is.

I always look at the foreign silver coins when I go to the local coin store. Their premiums are just too high for me. I don't even like paying the $4-6 for ASEs. But some of these 1 oz coins are listed at $45-$50!

Don't forget the ATB 5oz silver bullion coins. Always changing and absolutely beautiful. They really fill the variety void.
