My friend has a 1989 quarter, its a gold color, feels lighter than a regular quarter, has a D next to the year. Anyone ever seen anything like this before, is it a fake quarter, something someone just gold plated? Please help, thanks.
The D means its from the Denver Mint. The gold color could be toning but as you suspect its more likely to be gold plating. A lot of companies gold plate coin sets in the hope people will consider them to be more valuable. A lot of the State Quarter sets get this treatment but I have not seen it on an 89 Quarter.
