So I was snopping around the PCGS forums, when I found this interesting thread: http:// ****&threadid=611537
This guys bought an certified ICG Trade dollar from teletrade. Cracked it out and sent it to PCGS. PCGS didn't grade it because they said it was counterfeit. Well this got me thinking about my ANACS Trade dollar. So I took her out and tried to if she was fake or not.

Well, I can't really find any good information that shows you what to look for. All I was able to find was this http://www.coinworld.com/news/102102/news-3.asp and it's not that helpful.

So I tried to compare mine with some Trade dollars on ebay and heritage. I noticed that my mintmark is in a different location! Is this normal? I've noticed that all of the S mint marks for the 1877-S are under the 'S' in grains and mine is between the 'N' and 'S' of grains. I was only able to find one coin on ebay that had the same mintmark as mine. It was also in an ANACS slab. I know that from China they're making fake ANACS slabs, so I compared me with the other ones and they match. I've also had ANACS verify the number for me.

So is anyone an Trade dollar expert or knows anyone that could help? I would greatly appreciate it.

(In the old white ANACS holder, EF40 Details, was slabbed a month before I bought it from a dealer at a coin show)

Thanks!

Or is it that my boredom is slowly driving me mad?

What's the point verifying the number when the counterfeiters can just copy the real numbers? Not very difficult to do honestly.

That's true, but I find it unlikely that someone would sell a certification number one month after it was slabbed.

I don't know about that, there's lots of people who buy coins, have them slabbed, and then turn them around to make a profit.

After a Google search, this article on Coin World seemed best? Hope it helps, though it's hard to compare a coin without a genuine coin to compare it to. ><

I just looked at my 1877-S Trade dollar and my mint mark is directly under the S in grains also but if I am not mistaken the MM were punched by hand so their location may change a little bit but I am absolutely no Trade dollar expert to tell you for sure either way
