Hello
I have two pics. of a 1921 morgan that I own that I can send along to you if you wish. The files are to big to post on here. I will send to your email address.
Not the best pics, but you can get a general idea anyway.
It is an MS-63 with an SL finish (satin like) Might even grade
another step up. Value probably around 50-60 bucks at current grade.
First is to get (like Foundinrolls stated) a grade. Then after learning about that sufficiently, (did I spell that correctly:)
You can learn about the different types of the coins finish (if any)
I.E.: SL,SLP,PL,DMPL (in order: satin like, satin like proof, proof like and deep mirror proof like. That increases the value of a coin.
The MS designation stands for mint state. The same as uncirculated
in most cases. Just like the coin was hot off the presses, and never used. If you are really interested in the Morgan dollar, as many people are lately, you can get a lot of info online about it. It's history etc. Also after becoming very familiar with the above mentioned things, you may want to learn about the different types of dies that were used over the years minting morgans. They had certain things about the dies that were not perfect and when the coin was struck it showed up on the coin as an anomoly or slight defect.
Someone decided to keep track of these things and called them attributes. Certain attributes on a morgan or Peace dollar when put together are called VAMS. These VAMS can increase the value of the coin considerably. Even if the coin is not in perfect condition.
There are many experts on all sorts of coins at this site and they would be glad to help you out. I myself just started to learn about a few different coins here. Have fun, keep lookin...
