I'm almost certain I posted this somewhere, but possibly not here. Anyway, I can't find it and I'm still intrigued - is this a 2 Sol?
I think it's French. I found it in a job lot.

Correct on both counts. It's a French coin from the dying days (if you'll pardon the pun) of the Monarchy. After the Revolution, so it's got the fasces and liberty cap and "Year 4 of Liberty" on the reverse, but the monarch's portrait still on the obverse.

I have one too, in very similar condition. Here's a much nicer one on CoinArchives.

Is there much silver in it? I know it is bell metal "metal de cloche" but I cannot
remember the percentage of silver. The weight is 25 grammes - weighed it on my own electronic
scales.

It's brass/bronze, no silver at all.

G'day, the King shown on your coin is Louis XVI. He was stripped of his title, crown, & throne on 21 September 1792; and was executed, under the name 'Citizen Louis Capet' on 21 January 1793 (aged 38).
So, your coin marks the end of a phase of the Revolution.
Quite a bit of history in them 25 grams.

Thanks Peter, that puts the coin in context - a man shown in the last of days of power..
