Thanks for all the great replies. I'm sure you all realize that a picture generated by a flat bed scanner can only give you so much information and rarely does the coin justice. The coin in hand is remarkable--I know it doesn't show in the picture but the breast feathers on the eagle are visible. Next time I have it out I'll take some pictures with my microscope at various magnifications and show the detail. I think for now I'll put it in an airtight and enjoy looking at it. Maybe someday I'll bring it to a show and have someone grade it for me and then if it's worthwhile put it in a PCGS holder. I'm still happy with my $10 find .

Based on the head detail(which is spectacular) and taking into consideration that the pics are small scans, I would say this is an EF-AU coin if you can answer a couple questions-

is the outer edge of the shield by the chest complete and strong?

are the toes visible and separated on the foot?

darn good deal for $10

Here are some new pictures I took with the microscope at work. Do these help give it a more accurate grade?

Bryan1315:
Your Morgan looks in excellent condition and it looks as if it were a proof coin. Is it?

Gold Certificates, are you referring to the Morgan in my Dansco album? if so it is not a proof coin it just has a DMPL Obverse and that is exactly how it was graded by ANACS (which I had never seen a one sided grade noted on a slab before). If this isn't the coin you are referring to please let me know which one it is and I will respond about that particular one also (I have so many its hard to know which one is being asked about )

gee_dubya75, I sure wish I could say I only paid $10.00 for the one in my 7070 album and in my opinion it doesn't look much better than yours. I think you have yourself a keeper there because even though type1's aren't scarce they are getting harder to find in good condition

My monitor is not clear enough for me to see that coin so I think you should send it to me for a closer inspection.
Wonder if somebody would ever actually do that?

I would call that a solid XF standing liberty. Great strike, with nice detail in the head and shield. The only concern would be the apparent attempt to scrape away the toning between the face and shield. It also looks to me like it was cleaned at some point, but I suck at identifying cleaning.

STILL an outstanding find! I would flip to pick that up for 10 bucks at an antique shop. I should start calling my local antique stores to see if they carry coins.

Also, personally I would keep it. Finding a gem like that is so much more meaningful than simply buying one at market value in a coin shop. It's like... finding treasure.
