Today the rain was sporatically on and off. Then the Sun came out and then it rained again. Clouds on and off. All for a normally lousy day at a flea market. Of course Fridays are usually not the best for a flea market. However, one I go to has a guy that sells basically lots of coins although he appears to know very little about them nor cares. He usually puts all US coins in one or two bins and foreign coins in another. Just dumpts them in there. So due to the weather he didn't put anything out so I asked what US coins he had. I went to his van and looked at his latest pile ready to be dumped into the bins. I purchased 40 Mercury dimes from 1923 to 1945 in various conditions from about VG-8 to AU, 2 Liberty Walking halves in the 40's, 12 war year Nickels all in AU. One Nickel had a pronounced lamination problem on Jefferson's face. No problem since I don't like Jefferson anyway. Best coin I thought was a 1924D Mercury dime in about EF-40. Total price $40. This guy is normally cheap on prices but due to the weather he was better than usual.

Well done jc ... last time I picked up some coins and thought I did well but that seems MUCH better than what I've done. I tried to buy some random silver and War Nickels but the guy wanted a buck a piece, which I thought was a little high. I also saw a Canadian proof set from the 50's or 60's (it contained silver) that was $10 but didn't purchase. How does that price sound for something like that? I don't know much about proof sets so I passed but right now while thinking about it I feel like I should have purchased it. Oh well...

I have no flea markets around where I live. I miss be able to go to them. When I lived in NC, I use to go to one almost every weekend (in the Spring and Summer) at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh

I've only visited one coin booth at one fleemarket. And his coins seemed overgraded and/or cleaned. I'm always willing to look though, if I get another opportunity.

At most outdoor flea markets there are seldom coin dealers or at least anyone with coins on display. We used to have a lot of them but lately the clientel of flea markets has dropped considerably in honesty. One dealer I know had an entire tray of coins grabbed and the guy just ran off with them. Now if the seller would have ran after him, he would have had to leave his stand alone. Temptation for just more of the same which is possibly what the crook was hoping for. Most people just look the other way. No one wants to get involved. After that the seller never returned there again. One of our largest flea markets with about 1,000 sellers now has only 1 or 2 coin dealers at the most and now now knives, swords, spears, guns, bows, etc are allowed either. We used to have an indoor flea market with about 6 or 7 coin dealers but that one closed. We have just to many robberies lately for any types of items of value being left on a table.
Hey CPChicago: If you are in Chicago, try the Swaporama flea market on Lake and Manheim Road on Friday, outdoor section, first guy in, by the gate with white van for coins. He has been coming up with some Proof sets lately. Regardless of what he says for prices, just ague with him for better prices. If that doesn't work, tell nim Just Carl said to drop those prices. He will.
