Yep. I went down to pick it up at will call. I showed my ID and she brought out the rectangular, cardboard envelope. She set it down, I signed and started carrying it away. I got 3 steps and noticed it was light and thin. Then I noticed the side torn open. I looked inside, and sure enough.. NOTHING. I was so angry. I would prefer to use another word that starts with a P, but I can't on here.

So I immediately turned around and showed the lady. She got the manager. It was sent insured, so they brought out a claims form. The problem was, I had already signed for it. I'll be damned if the claims dept is going to tell me "Sorry, you signed for it. How do we know you didn't remove it yourself?".

So I demanded to have (some) kind of proof it was given to me that way. I first I asked them to give me back my signature so I can just refuse delivery. She talked to the Postmaster and no can do. Then I demanded they put a "damaged package" stamp on it, no can do. Finally I demanded a copy of the security feed that shows me picking up the package and turning back around. As it turns out that part of the building isn't picked up on camera. The only thing they could see is that I entered and never left.

So I had to settle for her signed statement that, based on the security cam.. I came in, noticed the package was open and immediately returned to will call, and never left the building.

I'm so steamed right now. Unfortunately I doubt they will actively try to find the thief. Not that it's a federal offense or anything. And hopefully they getting my money back won't be a complete headache.

Oh, PS: Susan, I think I might take you up on the offer to find a 1914-D.

That's a shame.

Same thing happened to me a while back, but it wasn't as valuable as a 1914 D, and the post office clerk said it was probably due to a machine tearing the envelope open.

Don't expect action any time soon and keep pressing and calling the PO. I lost a shipment of 45 rolls of quarters that according to the tracking number never left the PO it was sent from. it took over 8 months to get a check back for the PO insurance

Um.... yeah. I'd say that's accurate if you replace the word "machine" with "scumbag".

I am really sorry to hear that!

Exact same thing happened to me last January. After talking to the postmaster I got the feeling that it happens all the time and no one talks about it. (Many employees help themselves now and then, and they don't rat on each other).

Wow, that's horrible. :( Best of luck to you. Oh and you should have had them search you to show that you didn't quickly pocket it as your back was turned.

A friend of mine who is currently in Japan sent me a Japanese Cash Coin. When I received the envelope. One corner was torn open. The coin was not in a holder so it was fairly obvious that there was a coin in the envelope. If my friend hadn't taped () the coin to the letter he sent me I don't that the coin would've made it to me.

I hope it all works out for you USArmy!

Sounds like another case of the government messing with with our military personnel. I hope you resolve this problem, fast. Good luck!

Comic books are even worst. Comic book boxes always arrive looking like Ike Turner worked them over. And usually with part, or all, of the contents missing. Don't even bother using the USPS for comic books. The USPS employs cretinous thieves.

What a shame, sorry to hear this. I don't think PO will do anything anytime soon.

How can PO workers pick what's inside a package?
