Previously I went to the nearest US Bank to deposit money in my sons account. I am not a customer there but asked to buy a box of nickels. They told me since I was not a customer they ordinarily would not do it but since I had made the deposit in my sons account they would do it one time.
Fast forward to yesterday and I go to the US Bank and tell them I would like to open a savings account. I figured I would just put $100 in every time I bought a box of nickels and then I could just transfer the money to my sons account instead of writing him a check and going to deposit it. When I said I would like to buy a box of nickels they said no, they only sell them to "business customers".
So I said no thanks to opening an account there and will have to try somewhere else. My question I guess is how common is it to get turned down when trying to buy boxes? Is it just this one branch or is it a company wide issue?

I'm in Canada but have had similar issues as you. From inquiring further, I've found it's a branch issue, a managers decision. Keep trying different branches or banks and you'll get there. Try smaller banks too, it's worked well for me.

BofA has never given me issues, and sometimes don't even ask for my bank card.

I have never been turned down when ordering boxes, except for one credit union that I belong to, and I've held accounts with at least a half-dozen banks at one time. You just have to do the footwork.

Thanks for the input, it looks like I will be pounding the pavement. I am tempted to make that branch my dump bank, if they don't charge me that is!

To the bank quote buying unquote a box of nickels is really just a cost to them with no corresponding income. They provide the coins as a service for business customers who generate hundreds or thousands of dollars in fees.
Don't be too surprised if they turn down your deposit too: it cost them money to process the coin deposit.

I've had mixed luck at those banks. I think it depends a lot on the person ordering the boxes and how badly the bank wants your business.
Super busy banks I get the cold shoulder and don't get traction. But some of the smaller ones seem to be more willing to help.
Just have to try a few out and always be nice.
Good luck.

I have been turned down to get rolls, let alone boxes from about 50% of the banks I've asked. I only deal with banks that I have accounts with and will give me boxes hassle free now.
