when a truly valuable coin falls out, what do you do with it? do you mail it off to someone you don't even know? do you post it here or even on ebay? Is it a good idea to post it? what should be done?

Hi,I'm newer than a beginner to all of this and I keep asking myself the same question and constantly hesitating to actually make a decision. As I live in the uk and mainly collect coins of the uk aswell as uk and usa error/variety coins,i have wondered if I should send the usa coins to the usa to sell or get graded or trust the opinion of someone here?(please note,I have never actually sold a single coin).
Although,if I had coins which I wanted to get graded or at least have a trained eye look at them, before risking sending them to a stranger somewhere,Where would I start and who can I trust.?

there are reputable attributing agencies in both our countries, if I had a coin I suspected it s worth anywhere from 100 to 1000 dollars I would surely send it. to ngc or pcgs or something like that. they certify it, properly clean it and encapsulate it.
my particular problem is I found a coin I think I can pay off my mortgage with. I hope I have helped you.

it is an older doubled die not thought to have existed. it is a DDO in vf condition. I have the only one. it is a first and from many years ago. I don't know how to handle it. I think if I send it off somewhere I may never see it again. I also think if I post it others will be found before I get it attributed. I don't know what to do, the coin is strong. it s a wheatback.

Then hold on to the coin.. keep your lips sealed about it and go to a major show that has a certification agency right there and will do a walk through with you....

Not quite understanding the logic here. If a "strong" doubling and you have "the only one" why not share it? If it has not been identified yet why would others suddenly be found? Are you concerned about discovery credit? Wheats are one of the most studied series in American coinage....if you post it here and then others are found that would be a win/win.....no?

amida17, there were probably a few others made. once posted, it can be specifically searched for by date, in old saved rolls. the first is one of a kind and the most valuable. the logic is that while being the discover is nice, the maximum yield is even nicer. that's what I call win/win.

I would think that if others were found it would increase the desirability/collectability of the variety and set a higher value in general A one off would be a harder sell..... really it has NO value until it is sold anyway....

CoinMasters; I don't understand your concept on this so called D/D Wheat cent that could be valuable enough to pay
your mortgage off. but you were given good advise about bringing it to a show that has TPG's attending . let them take a look. good luck !

the wheatback is from a long time ago and not known to exit. so I figured it would be extremely valuable. maybe not as much as I was thinking, I don't know. I will check the balance on my mortgage, take the advice, hope for the best, and resign myself to the possibility that I may be only half right. thanks for your input.
