1898 Indian Head Penny - Impression Error?

I have an 1898 Indian Head penny that I was given years ago and it was tucked away.

I recently pulled it out to look at it and noticed it was not quite right. On the obverse, the date, Indian Head, and lettering on the right side are pressed into the face. On the reverse, everything appears normal. (as shown below)

Is this an error coin or does it look like someone messed with it?
