I sort of was hoping this poll would reflect the reason why the largest amount of people at coin shows are elderly. Not the dealers, but the collectors. Over the years I've noticed the average dealer age at about 30 to 50 but the average collector at about 50 to 1,000. Slight exageration there. I started collecting in 1943. And just like Jack Benny, I'm only 39. (Only us old people know that one)

Im 46 and started collecting coins about 35 years ago. I get in and out every few years. The bump back into active collecting was the State Quarters believe it or not. I know it is not the best investment, but I have a complete set to date of PCGS PR-69DCAM in silver. I now collect / hoard Lincoln Cents, trying to build a roll set of XF+ 1909-1933, and a PCGS MS-66RD set 1934 - 1958. A few other key dates, 16-d merc, 42/41, etc and some DMPL Morgans when opportunity pops up.

On and off again since I was a kid. Same old story, got started with a bunch of horded, silver, circulated coins. However, in the last five years I have been going at it with a purpose and think I'm hooked for life!

I've been collecting since '68 or '69. I was around 8 or 9 years old.

I started in 1999 saving State Quarters from circulation for my newborn son. I bought him one of those maps that are so easy to get the quarters in (sarcasm). He turns 8 tomorrow. I still add quarters to the map as they come out. Sometimes I wish that was all I was spending on coins! I have no self control. I will be turning 31 on Thursday. Jim

I started in the early 80s when I was about 7 or 8 and my father also collected so that helped me get a start. He took me to a few shops and shows now and then. When I was a teenager, I became a bit disinterested but held on to my coins. As an adult, I was not really actively collecting but I still passively searched. Every so often, I would find a wheat ear, silver dime, etc and put it aside. About five years ago, I lost about 3/4 of my childhood collection to a theft during a move. In a way, it was a good thing because it sparked my interest again. The past five years I have been seriously collecting and, more importantly, absorbing knowledge.

Started around 40 years ago, went dormant for a long time, then it kicked back in about 8 years ago. (I sure have enjoyed the fairly arbitrary purchasing decisions of 6-8 years ago at full retail price now appearing to be shrewd investments!)

I started in the early 50's, Lincoln cents, nickels, dimes, took a break of 50 years or so and got back into it early this year. I joined a coin club and between them and this forum, I'm enjoying soaking up some of the knowledge from the members.
just carl.....what a coincidence, like you I'm only 39, and I do remember Jack Benny!

I collected from age 10 to about age 12, then my collection was stolen. Now I (think) I've been collecting again for about a year and a half.. give or take.
