After the huge "copystand" step, I tried to improve my coin shots with better lighting.
I set up a circuit for a 20W fluorescent bulb, with small distance and no other light source, these are what I got.

I think these are the best shots of circulated coins I have taken so far.

I consider to use the axial lighting trick to see if I can get rid of the shadows and have evenly lit coins.

I was going to recommend that, RenaL. Use two light sources, one on either side of the coin, but keep them fairly dim.
Use a dark background, not a white one. All that light reflects back into the camera lens. This matters a lot more if you're using a digital camera on automatic settings.
And mostly, just keep experimenting!

Nice photos, light your coin evenly, as Ellekitty says, two light sources are best, although you could use a reflector of white paper on the opposite side as the light to reflect light back to the coin.

even diffused light is the key

Nice shots Renal. In your first photo are you using the light right above or axial?

I was holding the bulb over the coin a little to the left (because of the camera)

Tonight I found a piece of glass to experiment with axial lighting.
There is a great difference with small changes of the angle of the glass.

Here are the results:

Some light bands are visible on the coin

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y8...1007_054.jpg
Too small angle, too much light

Reminder to block the red self-timer light

I'm convinced this will be the best method for me. Once I set a clearer and rigid 45 degree glass, the whole set up should shorten the time spent for each coin.

I wonder if anyone wwill have the time to click on all of these:)

My humble notes about axial lighting:

Probably my light bulb is not large enough, so I still get a band of light, not even light all over the coin.

The reflecting glass is better if not fixed at exactly 45 deg. It helps to be able to move it.

With an amateur digital camera like mine, every coin, every background, every light gives different results.
I may try to use one more bulb and some white paper as reflector, I used that method on this one with single bulb. I believe that one an compete with others with the glass.

I'm your huckleberry.....

59 and 109 are my favorites. Great pics with great color. Some silver seems a bit "bright", but overall, that are very very nice.

Thanks Tighe,

The coin with Tolstoy is kind of dirty, and the other one; the '64 Innsbruck Winter Olympics - 50 Schillings is unfortunately cleaned:(

But I agree that they are great designs.

I'm starting to think this is what I can get with the camera in hand.

Yup. If any of these were taken without your 45 degree glass, I don't think you need it.....

This 50p is shot without the glass. I was holding a piece of white paper over the camera to reflect the light.
