I've looked at the pictures and details about VAM, and know that I don't know a thing! Hopefully these pictures are good enough for some guidance and help. Please let me know your thoughts.

All I know is the major VAM for this coin would be VAM-7 doubled date. Do the 9's in the date look like they are doubled at the tops?

http://www.vamworld.com/1899-S+VAM-7

It is hard to tell for sure with your photos.

Even with magnification, the 9's do not appear to be doubled. I'll try to get better pictures.

1899-P is an easy date because of the small number of varieties but every single one requires magnification to see. You probably couldn't post a full-face image of an 1899 here which was large enough to attribute. So, it either has to be done in-hand with a 10x loupe and the VAMworld page or professional-level detail images here.

VAMming ain't easy.

I maxed the resolution on my scanner, zoomed in about 25x, then took a screen shot to detail the date.
Hopefully the new picture will upload and show better detail.

This is an 1899-S. There are still only a few possible VAMs, and as eagle eye said, the only major VAM is VAM 7 with a doubled 1-99.

Unfortunately VAMworld doesn't have a close-up pic to show the doubling that we're looking for. You can see it a bit in the full coin photo they have, but your close up pic cuts off where the doubling would be on the 2nd 9. Looking at the first 9, I don't see the doubling associated with a VAM 7.

I think in order to determine the VAM on this one we also need a detail pic of the mint mark.

Most likely it isn't anything special, and I'm ok with that. The real value of this coin is the memory of finding it during an historic hotel remodel 30 years ago. It was lodged behind the shelf & mirror of one of the bathrooms.

Here's the mint closeup for anyone interested.

From the available evidence, I like the mint mark for the "Wide S" look, which would make it VAM-2.
