Hello, I'm a novice at best with collecting so I don't know if I am even in the right place :(. First, I live in Canada and have an 1884 Morgan dollar that I was thinking of having graded.

i don't know if it could be a counterfit or not but I have been told its harder to find with the mint mark it has and possibly its state, though I'mnot sure.

i was just wondering if many counterfits were ever made for the year 1884 with the s mint mark? and if there is a possibility that it could be rare, where could I have it graded in Canada that does US coins?

It's a poorly made counterfeit.

Just for reference, compare your coin to this authentic 1884-S that Heritage sold recently. One look at the legitimate coin, and instantly you will see that every detail on your coin is wrong.

The best thing to say is, if you compare the details of your coin to the one in CB's link, you'll see that not one single detail is correct. There's nothing deceptive about your coin, because nothing is correct. I believe it's likely a silver round deliberately made to look like a Morgan but not close enough to fall afoul of counterfeiting law. They deliberately did everything wrong.

I don't know though does the surface look like it was even made out of silver. It seems more likely it's a base metal.

Well that was the reason I asked bc it wouldn't stick to any magnets that I own. As well, the surface has tarnishing. I don't have a scale to which would benefit me either so I thought what you experts would think

Spurious my friend. Welcome aboard! If you ever do get a rare date or high grade Morgan you can get them graded by ICCS in Toronto but it will not help you when you go to sell it. US dealers and collectors would just consider it as a raw coin .
