I stopped at a new coin shop on the other side of town. Decided to see what they had to offer. They had this 1944 Half and I couldn't pass it up. This will make a great addition to my WWII type set. What are your opinions on the grade? The Rev. has a few hits on the rim towards the top. The eagle leg has a hit. The Obv. has a few nicks on the leg and a very minor scratches on the usual high spot of her front. She has Luster on her chest still...  The fields are perfect. Thank you   |

Might make a nice jewelry piece, the obverse scratches, polishing, and rim hits make it pretty much uncollectable.

Hey, ease up, Jimbucks. That coin is way nicer than average, and the strike is great. When you can see the hand of Liberty and all the eagle feathers, you have a nice strike. I can't tell for sure from the photos whether the surfaces are original, but I sure can't say they are not. I'm glad for One50 that he got an upgrade and I'm glad he shared it with us. The concept of "collectability" is a personal one. Remember the old aphorism "One man's trash is another man's treasure". There is no right or wrong way to collect coins. If you are enjoying it, you are doing it the right way.

If the reverse didn't have those 2 rim dents I would give just the rev. MS-68+ , YES THAT NICE ! however the obverse
has too many hits on her skirt and large scratch on right side of skirt. NET MS-63

The rim hits are for sure a distraction.
I would have to disagree with jimbucks about the polish.
I don't see it anywhere, the vertical area by the "T" on the Obv. are actually flowlines (if thats the correct term).
When in hand it almost looks like the Rev. hit really hard and made that area.
This was taken on my cell phone. Not the best tool for color, but I'm working on it.
If there is another reason for you think it was polished, please let me know so I can check it out and learn.

I didn't even look at the small rim dents because the coin is so great looking I couldn't stop looking at it...  |

Great strike but I think it would only grade MS-63 because of the hits.

Great strike but she's pretty beat up to grade anything higher than MS-60 in my book.

One thing I love to do when I can is look at coins from TPGs. When I purchased this coin, the dealer had a box of slabbed Morgans, all were MS 62-64. I looked at them to just learn grading and what not. The Morgans were BEAT compared to this coin. I know it's not apples to apples but what am I missing? Coin grading seems easy enough, but it always amazes me how far off I am. So I guess its not that easy.  Thanks for the comments and feedback. |

In my opinion (and many others) the TPGs are very inconsistent with their grading. Some folks new to collecting would say "wow what a great coin it grades xxx" and not take problems like rim bumps, scratches or weak strikes into consideration. Any mint state coin with problems technically should not grade any higher than MS-60. This is a guideline that I have used in my over 30 years of collecting. Just because the TPGs grade a coin it does not mean that that grade is written in stone. The fact that some dealers will send coins back to the TPGs again and again hoping for a higher grade speaks for itself.

It's all subjective... one person will look at a coin and grade it MS-60 another will look at the same coin and grade it MS-64..it's all what you see. First off.. you have to have the coin in hand to really be able to tell, looking at a computer screen isn't going to tell you much especially, if the photos are not the best, It's all guess work...  Your coin is a good example- some are saying MS-60... to me the coin looks MS-63, great strike, great looking fields, the only thing which to me is not that bad is the 2 rim dents that you only see on the reverse.
