Amazing coin-1200 years old, worth over $600k USD, found by dog walker. I know mant must know the tale but I didn't.

King of Mercia's gold coin is placed under export bar until October
An 8th-century gold coin has been placed under a temporary export bar by the Culture Minister David Lammy. The rare coin was issued during the reign of Coenwulf, who was king of Mercia from 796 to 821. It was recommended by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council Reviewing Committee to provide every effort to keep the item in Britain. The Committee deemed the 4.33g coin of special aesthetic significance and was of great importance to the study of monetary history, government and the history of London. The Anglo-Saxon 20mm coin, which was produced in London (the only mint in the kingdom), was found in 2001 at Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. The well-preserved and detailed coin (or mancus) contains an image of Coenwulf alongside inscribed lettering. The inscription, DE VICO LVNDONIAE, is the only known reference to the vicus or wic (trading settlement) of London, and provides an important royal endorsement of the importance of the settlement. The daisy pattern on the mancus can also be found on other Anglo-Saxon metalwork, such as the chalice found at Sutton Hoo. The price recommendation for the coin, deferred until October 2nd, is £357,832 with a possible extension until February 2006.
