I'm not ready to buy one yet, but I've been looking at AU Trade dollars for several months. Where are all of the $300-600 Trade dollars that don't look like junk? The PCGS price guide hasn't changed much during this time: http://www.pcgs.com/prices/frame.ch...trade_dollar

Right now I'm finishing up buying the Seated dollars for my 7070, and the market for the AU ones have fell in line with the PCGS price guide. However, with the Trade dollars it seems like I have to pay $1200-$1500 to get the same quality when the SAME GRADE is actually listed as being cheaper in the PCGS price guide.

Can someone explain this current Trade dollar market for me? I've been waiting months for the PCGS price guide to catch up to the market I'm seeing but it hasn't changed at all.

www.jjteaparty.com always seems to have a few EF/AUs in stock. Currently a 1877-S and a 1878-S, both high AU and in the $600 range. Other than that, I can't say much on the subject since AU Trade dollars are a bit over my price point My Trade dollar hole is filled with a chopmarked VF for the time being but I will eventually upgrade to a nice EF example.

That's one of the best looking $650 specimens I've seen in a long time! That $650 one would satisfy me, but the other one I wouldn't touch. I checked their site a while back and they didn't have those two, so it figures that as soon as I post this some good ones are out there.

Higher grade Trade dollars have gone through the roof. A lot of MS ones are extremely expensive.

I know nothing about Trade dollars, but I hear they are one of the counterfeited items. So you have to watch what you buy on them. That's all I know. I guess I'm Trade dollar challenged.

Another point that I didn't come out and say directly is that it seems PCGS will slab an AU Trade dollar that a Seated Liberty dollar in the same condition would be slabbed as an XF.

So for me to get a comparable condition Trade dollar as my Seated dollars are, it seems that I have to go a grade above what my Seated dollars are. I've found plenty of MS60-63 Trade dollars that look comparable to my AU Seated dollars; however a Trade dollar in MS is way out of my price range.

It also hard to find a trouble free Trade dollar. Alot have chop marks, scratches, corrosion or have been cleaned. I have been looking to upgrade the one I have as it has been cleaned and scratched.
