I just got hold of my first lot of about 35 Roman coins. They are pretty low grade and some of them look like little more than small pieces of rock. So I am attempting to 'clean' them by electrolysis to bring out a bit more detail. Does anybody who has cleaned up crusty ancient coins before know any good tips for me as this is my first experiment with electrolysis.

Thanks in advance,
Matt

Actually I prefer to use more traditional methods. Others swear by electrolysis. Here is a popular site and a yahoo group for coin zapping.

I found this site some time ago and although I have never used it, I thought it might come in handy one day.

Thanks for the info so far guys - I am having mixed luck with the electrolysis so far. In fact, not sure what it's doing but some stuff is definitely being removed. As to how much improvement, if any, I could not say.

By the way, does anyone know what the black colour is? On some coins as you clean them you start to get black colouring...

I have noticed coins getting black if they get too hot. What are you using for an electrolyte? Salt is good, but is very conductive, I generally use Arm & Hammer washing soda, and the zapping slows and the coins do not get as hot so quickly. I also only zap for maybe 30 seconds, pull the coin out and pick and scrub, then zap more if needed, and repeat until satisfied.

Hi Victor, I think the coins I am cleaning are quite sensitive and the grades aren't that high. I also wonder if the item description wasn't entirely accurate as they maybe have already been treated. Coins aren't very large either - scrubbing? I am not scrubbing at all!
