I don't check this forum everyday but when I do, I want to find things like you guys are finding. How do you look for these things? What is your technique? How do you prepare and educate yourself?

I think part of my problem is that I don't know what to look for and there are so many varieties and errors that I don't know how to start educating myself. I also get somewhat impatient when looking. I'll start slow, checking both sides of every coin and by the end, I am sometimes only looking at year and mint mark. Do you check each coin under magnification? Any tips on education, technique, tools, etc?!?!

At this point, I don't think I really want to collect errors and varieties, but am interested, so this may change. I could always find them and sell them to you guys - so helping me is like helping yourself!!

Finding this stuff takes a lot of knowledge and a tremendous amount of time. The knowledge can be had from experience or by reading/studying books about errors and varieties. Amount of time is key because it takes patience and perseverance to search through mounds of coins. If you look long and hard enough for a double die error, you will find one. It just may take looking through hundreds of coins

If I remember correctly from one of coppercoins' posts from a while back, you also want to make sure you don't try to make something out of nothing per say. I believe he was just trying to help people from long term eye strain!! As far as I can surmise, most true doubled dies will stand out pretty darn good on their own. I'm not an expert, and I honestly don't know the magnification level needed to see all true doubled dies, or if any is needed at all. Just pointing out that it can take a long time to find the "real deal". If frustration sets in, move on to something else for a bit.

Personally, I STILL can't see half of the doubling that's on Coppercoin's site.

I asked about 50 stupid questions about doubling/RPM until I just went to ebay and bought one of them. That was such a huge help.

It can be very frustrating at first. But after learning more and more about the different varieties and errors that are out there, it gets to be a challenge. I search about 3000 coins a week, pennies mostly. And after 3 years of searching, it was only the other day that I found a strong doubled die 1983. I find die cracks, Cuds, strike throughs and off strikes mostly, but when I found that doubled die, I felt redeemed, like it was worth it, I had meet the challenge. So if you are up for a challenge, start reading books, watching this site, and other coin collecting sites. Knowledge is power. Good Luck.
