I picked this one today at CoinFest from Tom Hyland. It has a light gold tint to it. He graded it AU due to weak strike, I thought it would make EF45 at best. He had a 1839 that would definitely make AU55 for $40 more but that's a var 3 and I preferred this one since its var 2.

What do you think?

Thank you.

That's a beauty Shatsi!! I agree with your assessment of EF45. I think it's pretty darn close to AU, but I think I see enough wear at the front of the bust and the wings to keep it at EF45.

Regardless, it's a very nice addition.

I keep thinking about the 1839 as it had more details. Hope I made the right decision. I just felt this reverse is better since its different to the standard "Half Dollar".

Hi Shatsi,

I'd call your coin an EF40. It looks original and problem-free. The 1837 often comes with strike weakness, especially on the reverse lettering. Your coin looks like it was struck from worn dies. You can see radial flow lines on the reverse in the words United and America, as well as "stretching" of some of the obverse stars. These effects are typical signs of serious die wear.

For comparison, here's my 1837. One reason I purchased this coin was that the strike was pretty solid. I sent it to SuperDave for his first PCGS group submission. PCGS rejected it as cleaned. I then sent it to ICG; they graded it AU50 which I think is about right.

I'm sorry, are you commenting on Jaoblers reeded half?

I don't see any hairline marks to think mine cleaned.

Sorry amac44, I find it too pretty to let go. I paid $300 for it but didn't mind as I was so attracted to it.
