I was trying to answer one of my own questions regarding a 1949-D
lincoln, when I decided to weigh several diff. coins.
I weighed up a bunch of 44 and 45 p's and d's (shellcase bronze)
Then some 46 thru 49's. (copper)
Maybe bronze is or is not the correct metal. It is what I learned
so ? But anyway, The weights came out equal with both types. I found this interesting. I am sure the experts on here may already know this but I just wanted to post. I thought by weighing the two diff. types of planchets (coins) that I could figure out if the 49-D I have was a bronze or whatever ? planchet variety. Only slight diff. I found was between the 44-P and D's versus the 45-P (former, avg. weight was 3.01 grams, latter was 3.14 grams. I had read somewhere
that the 49-D (bronze) was rare. Is this true ?
Thank's again

Your confusing yourself drastically.

All Lincoln Wheat Ears cents minted from 1909 through 1958 are bronze with the exceptions being the cents of 1943 that were zinc coated steel.

From 1944 through 1946, copper was salvaged from shell casings. Coins from 1944 through 1946 did not contain any tin in the alloy. Still they were bronze. Bronze is a combination of copper mixed with zinc. The color of Uncirculated specimens of the 1944 through 1946 issues is just slightly different than the 1909-1942, 1947-1958 issues that came before and after.

From 1947 to 1958, the composition was still bronze but was the same alloy as the 1909-1942 cents. The weights of all the bronze cents, 1909-42, 1944-46 (shell case copper alloy) and 1947-58 are the same 3.11 grams.

Your coin is a normal, everyday bronze (normal) 1949 D cent.

If you have a Guide Book of United States coins (The Red Book) it will give you the compositions of the Lincoln Cent series.

Thanks,
Bill

Your 1949 D cent is a normal bronze alloy and is not rare at all.

That all makes sense. the site I was looking at listed them a little diff. but with the same outcome. Listed 1909-42 as copper, 44-45 shell casing bronze, then back to copper. I'll get the web add.
and send him a note :) I guess my 45-P is just a little overweight:)
The reason I asked in the 1st place, was I had made a note 40 plus yrs. ago in my whitman album pertaining to my 49-D to ck. if it was bronze. Must of read something way back then about it.
