Self educating, is a learning proces on it's own, learning from your mistakes is the best lesson to remember, and teach all you have learned is the education you can do Metalman.

In addition to this forum and experience, there are a lot of books and websites. We are all responsible to learn about what we collect before spending our money.

The premuim way to get educated is to ask a lot of question's. Many educated coin people, will be more than willing to help in any way. CoinWorld magazine is also a great resource. If you read every month, cover to cover. You will learn a whole lot |

So Do you pick and choose which forum members you give special attention when they speak on a particular subject or do you just soak it all in ,and then form a derivative of the varied opinions that are given on most subjects ?

I learned all I know about coingrading from a great american friend I never met and probably will never meet ( he is a retired coindealer with exceptional eye for grading )
In return I provided german, french, dutch, spanish translation assistance
Since everybody's time is limited there is no such thing as a free lunch I think
I posted a question on a silver coin on another forum and since nobody could be bothered to answer the question I quit posting
There are a lot of people around that do not know the time of day
and will post as if they are experts
It is important to decide yourself who is fake and who knows what he/she is talking about

That is the point of this thread,in a nut shell, with the varied opinions, consensus is seldom reached, with all of the differing information, when a question is asked concerning an opinion!!! an answer is very important,this will help in the learning curve of everyone !!
I have seen questions asked about how an opinion was reached and be ignored by the presenter of the information, I have also been the asker of the questions concerning an opinion and been ignored, this type of thing does little to educate and in fact I believe IMHO is a detriment to it !!!

I cant speak for Ageka, but for me Yes it was in this forum .
No big deal really I guess, but when an opinion is not explained by the person who holds that opinion it leaves an open ended question ,,Maybe this person views a question on their opinion as aurgumentative or a personal challenge to their knowledge ?
When in reality My question was an attempt to learn and understand why we had such differing opinions .

I posted a question about a silver half dollar on another american forum
It was not even my problem but a german forum had nobody knowledgeable and not many that wrote american
So I tried to help them and was just ignored
I feel very happy about this forum
On coins I refrain of giving any opinion on coins when I cannot back up my opinion with a reason behind the opinion
So if I ignore original questions it is because I deem myself not competent to defend my (probably emotional ) opinion
On the other hand if I have expressed a view and fail to respond to follow up anybody can pm me because then the problem is that I live in a very different timezone and missed the question

Carl You have touch on a very valuable subject Personal responsibility. While forums and books are good, you have to make the effort to educate yourself. You can't force someone to learn against their own will. (Now to get in trouble) This is not only true about coins, it is true about everthing in life if people would assume personal responsibility, we would not have so much politics in the world. An example of this is a recent disaster in Japan. When there was a flood and power outage, the people lined up orderly in the stores and got food, water diapers etc. and payed in cash becaue there were no registers. When asked why they did not loot, they replied it was their city. They did not want to damage their city any more. They took personal responsibility and got thrugh the disaster in fine style. Now to get off my soap box If it is Coins or disasters we each must take personal responsibility First, then we can get assistance from others. Thank all of you on the forum who have answered my questions and will continue to help the community. (Mike- Susan- If you want to delete this feel free to do so - but I felt I had to vent) rggoodie

I think you need to take information wherever you find it and then judge it for yourself based upon what you know of the source, what they reference, etc. That goes for books, websites, forums, etc.
If you are around a forum long enough and pay good attention, you tend to get an idea of people's strengths, their areas of expertise, their biases, etc. I don't weigh everyone's opinion the same but I certainly try to listen to all that are offered.
As far as being ignored on forums, sometimes it is just that no one has an answer, sometimes it is that they don't revisit the thread after commenting, sometimes it is just that the forum doesn't have enough activity. Rarely have I come across a situation in a coin forum where someone is just flat out ignored fo the heck of it if they ask a question...and I visit a lot of the forums on the net.

metalman, I basically taught myself all I know, which is why I donno sheet. Read lotsa books, post in a couple forums and have spent "mocho dinero" and have gotten burnt plenty. On the other hand I have also acquired some real special stuff--some even might be considered rare stuff special stuff--But educating? You really have to educate yourself. I listen (read) in forums from those who are experts, those experts "wannabees" they know who they are, and then I listen the most to the average joe--guys like you--Guys like you and others in here I learn more than books--and of course actual buying and grading on the fly-Of course lotsa reading in the internet, you know what? I still donno sheet LOL-  |
