Let me apologize if I am in the wrong place or posting something you can't help with. I am not really a coin collector. I am collecting just coins we get. Every day my husband gives me his change and I fill the Whitman books. I've collected them all from the pennies to the now gold dollars. But pretty much contemporary coins and just stuff passed on in general populice. I do have some old coins given to me. I've bought the proof sets. I have no clue about grading and all that. I don't want to bug a coin shop as I am sure the coins aren't worth much at all. BUT... I do have an odd thing. That's what I want to ask about. It's a 1978 Lincoln Cent. It's odd because it's gold colored. Reading your forum I see where kids do plating experiments and it's probably that. Only my coin seems LIGHTwieght. It almost feels hollow. It's not a toy coin; of that I am sure. Is this possibly still a plated or experiment cent? Or is there some oddity that would make something feel lighter in weight than other cents? My other question is, is it even worth bothering a coin shop with things like foreign coins, walking Liberty quarters, Indian Head cents and Buffalo nickels that aren't in the best condition? As a novice, I sit here with a handful of these types of things and realize after research many are only worth just more than the value most likely but then there's always this thing in the back of my mind "what if this is something someone would like to collect". I don't want to make someone roll their eyes bringing in junk.... and seem stupid to boot but yet, sitting here and me not collecting them, I'd like to get rid of most of it and just do my little books. Any suggestions appreciated. Again, my apologies if I've made a posting error (wrong section etc). Thanks, Sue

ok; when I get back, I'll post the penny and also some of the coins. I have one I think might be an ancient roman coin but am not sure. I don't even remember where it came from.

Welcome dahoov, don't think your asking stupid questions, they are very helpful here, I have been known to ask some really dumb questions,(but they were dumb, just unknown to me)and people here were patient. So ask away, post pics, have fun.

Hi dahoov2 Welcome to the forum ! Do you have a way to weight the Lincoln Cent ? it should weigh 3.11 grams . as for the other coins pictures would be a big help ,,if not then dates and mint marks will at least tell if you have any rarities in your handful of coins . Don't be shy about asking questions here ,,I can guarantee that no one will roll their eyes at you . we love to help ! Metalman

Please feel free to ask your questions, we can try to help. As requested, Pictures would be a great help. It is quite possible that the 1978 cent you have is indeed plated. I have several coins that have come to me in sets or in circulation that have been gold plated, chrome plated, spray painted :-) etc.
Once we see some pictures we might be able to give you some ideas.
Thanks,
Bill

Yea Sue, I bet that most of the people here can pull the change from their pocket and give a good half hour talk on each coin pulled. I think you should feel free to ask any question you might have. I'd answer more questions but I'm still looking for answers myself. Enjoy the forum, I know I have.

I am sorry; can't figure out how to post the photos (Iwould like to send about 7 or 8 LARGE photos of various coins - so I can do both sides). Alas, it appears that you have to post 50 posts before uploading photos? Well, this makes three! LOL

dahoov, the 50 post rule is for uploading photo's to the gallery, not to post here. Read the uploading photos tutorial to your left of this page. You have read it carefully, and understand the 100kb size restrictions, you can use a editing software to scale downt he photos, and they automatically have a program to make them bigger when clicked on. You may use the software that is listed on the tutorial, or I use GIMP 2.2, it is easy to understand and I can scale my photos easily. http://www.gimp.orgI think they now have the new version 2.4

dahoov, Wrongalot is correct. What are you seeing when trying to upload? Are you getting an error? If you send me an email through the forum system I can try to help you.

Thanks; I tried to email you via the site and more problems. It said I don't have enough posts to email anyone on the group. No worries. I tried to upload and it said "successful" but don't know where it went... I don't see it here. Don't need to download the software; use Photoshop and managed to do the 500 w pixels totaling 98-99k so no problem there. If someone wants to email me at home and upload, no problem. I will have 10 photos total though. 3 sets of foreign coins front and back (6 photos), front and back of some US coins that maybe worth keeping or looking at (2 photos) and that pesky penny... front and back (the scan and the digital camera cannot really capture the color though).

dahoov, well done. I would recommend maybe breaking the coins down in slightly smaller groups and taking a couple more pictures, or crop down your large image so you can resize just a little larger. For right now, I am going to move these photo threads over to the world coin forum so you will get the needed exposure and answers.

thanks; I can identify some countries (some do say UAE or Jordan) and obviously a few from England, but some can't be identified. I really like the looks of the dual colored one.... I will post the US coins though. That's just two photos and only 8 or 9 coins. Thanks so very much!

ok; last photos. US coin including the penny. The penny is next to a "regular" penny for reference (it doesn't really scan in right color). In here is what I think could be an ancient coin? Roman perhaps? If someone can help identify, that'd be really awesome! I don't think these have value, but never hurts to ask I guess. Thanks to everyone; you've all been really kind and patient.

You are more than welcome. Some more comments for you, whether you like them or not. Quote: I am not really a coin collector Um, yes you are, you said it here yourself : "I am collecting just coins we get" That's the first step to being an addict like us....... Quote: Every day my husband gives me his change and I fill the Whitman books. Again, this is what coin collectors do!! Quote:My other question is, is it even worth bothering a coin shop with things like foreign coins, walking Liberty quarters, Indian Head cents and Buffalo nickels that aren't in the best condition? Yes and no. But give yourself time before you decide you don't want them. What are you going to do when the current Whitman albums are full? Quote: I really like the looks of the dual colored one Typically called Bi-metallic if I'm not mistaken.

Last photo close up of the penny and the possible ancient coin. This is the closest I could do within the guidelines here. THANKS
