Some of you may remember that I went to the release of The SAS $1 coin back in March, at the Campbell Barracks in Perth. This is the coin... It cost me $80, but a couple of days ago I saw one sell on E-bay for $510. That's a pretty good return in just 7 months. Anyone else buy one of these? Steve

G'day, "SAS" is an abbreviation for the "Special Air Service Regiment" of the Australian Army. It is based near Perth, W.A. It was modelled on the British Army's Regiment of the same name. Someone more expert than I might be able to tell you how different or similar it is now. And, yes, it would be fair to classify the SAS as "Special Forces".
The SAS, described above, is not to be confused with the OTHER SAS ("Saturdays & Sundays"), a.k.a. "Weekend Warriors", a.k.a. Army Reserve.
It's a shame that the coin wasn't released for circulation.

I bought one of these coins on seeing your original post. Good choice I think. I've also purchased the FDC & coin that was issued to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Aussie SAS http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2007-50th-Ann...DC_W0QQitemZ a href= https://www.coincommunity.com/go/link.asp?target=https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/250186818900 target= _blank rel= nofollow 250186818900 /a QQihZ015QQcategoryZ3372QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem. PT...in the UK we class the SAS as the 'best of the best' & the SAS in Ozz is still very similar to the British model. They work closely together, as do they both with the Kiwi version. When I was last in Perth I met up with a guy who was ex-Australian SAS & he said that he had gone on patrol with other Aussies...dressed in British Army uniform...on the streets of Northern Ireland ( a few years previous ) to get experience of fighting in built up areas. The British SAS did the same in Vietnam without actually advertising the fact as we were not supposed to be involved in that conflict. I have seen SAS in Perth walk around in uniform but here in the UK that isn't the case, probably due to the terrorist threat we've had since the late 60's. I would have to say you cannot get much better than an SAS trooper, regardless of whether he was a Brit, an Aussie or a Kiwi.

SAS very good and a SAS $1 coin from RAM would have been up there with the 2000 VC coin in terms of demand
