Received in the mail today.

AR 2 Dirham
Ilkhanid (Iranian Mongols)
Uljaytu AH 704-716 (1304-1316 AD)
Dated AH 714 (1314 AD)
Kashan mint
Obverse legend inside the cartouche refers to the titles and name of Uljaytu. The mint and date are on the margin
Reverse: In te filed the legend reads Ia Ilah illa Allah/ Muhammed/rasul Allah/Ali.
25 mm x 3.93 grams
Reference Diler UI-370

The great Khan Kublilai gave his brother Halagu rule over the western province (Iran) The title of Il-Khan (tribal Khan was bestowed on him). This titled passed onto each member of the family that succeeded.

Thanks bob, it's the first one of this type that I've bought. I liked that it was silver and from the Mongols.

I bet you this coin looks just like it did when it fell from the die all those years ago. The script is beautiful. The Mongols are a truly fascinating people. The Mongol Empire was the most vast in all of history encompassing many peoples and cultures.

Unexpectedly these semi Nomadic people made one of the largest contributions to human kind. They preserved the knowledge of the west, invented paper currency, practiced religious tolerance and encouraged long distance trade.

Your early coin is rich in condition and history. Kudos.

Even with the weak strike, the rest of the coin does look like it was minted yesterday. When I first saw it I just knew I had to have it.

Not my area either Dutch, but I'm starting to branch out beyond the classical Roman and Greek coinage into the Eastern Empires.
