Never been to a coin show see there is one in Calgary tomorrow . Is there any deals to be had at these shows (55 tables) or is this all about the dealers getting top dollar out of the public?

Sometimes you have to make your own 'deals'.
When a dealer says "I need $100.00 for the coin", usually I say either 'yes' or 'no thank-you', but sometimes I counter with "I'm a buyer at $80.00" and you'd be surprised at how many times the 'deal' is made.
You have to know your prices though.
You can't just be a smart-arse know-it-all and think you can get away with low ball offers. That's not going to work.

I definitely will be going on Sat. or Sunday. For those who don't know it's at the Clarion Hotel on 19 Street and 16 Avenue N.E. Mostly higher end items at this coin show. The majority of the dealers come from out of town and are limited by the amount of stock they can bring as they fly or drive to the show. If your looking for deals your best bet would be to check the stock of the local dealers or one's that are nearer to Calgary. They are more able to bring larger amounts of inventory. Stop by Calgary Coin, Clyde Vincent, or George Manz, as they tend to bring larger stock. As doubleeagle noted don't be afraid to make a offer if you find something that catches your eye. The worst they can say is no thanks. If you have never been to a coin show before I advice you to go as I am sure you will find it very exciting. Good luck and have fun.

Hey Wireman would you be kind enough to look out for any JOP dollars, I have a chance on a 1935 and would be interested in what they might fetch.Thanx

@nickel nubber...Sure, no problem. I will check and see what's at the show and let you know Sat. or Sun. what grade was available and the price there asking. JOP counterstamp dollars are a very unique and interesting dollar. Also very popular with collectors.

I was just about to make a new topic about this. This is also my first coin show and I will be attending on Saturday. I am mostly looking for some coin supplies but I would like to talk to some dealers to get some knowledge and see interesting pieces. Does anybody know what time this will be running from? I have checked online and could not find the times.

Really enjoyed the show. It was much better than last years show. The dealers were quite friendly and willing to negotiate, and had a great selection. I had pleasant transactions with Hugh Powell, Robert Kokotailo and David Peter.
To anybody who hasn't gone yet or is thinking of going, I'd definitely recommend it.

I went mostly to buy supplies and see some great coins and banknotes. There were some really good tables, but I didn't end up buying any coins. I was considering a toonie test token, but decided not to. I would not have recognized any faces from CCF, but I was there on Saturday at 10 am. Jolly good show.

I heard the show was such a big success that they are planning on another one in September.
Don't know if this is fact or just a rumour.

This is true. Same place and times, September 12 and 13, 2015.

Wow! Looks like Calgary will finally have more than one show per year. The turnout was twice as much as last years. Hopefully, we will continue to get a good turnout and perhaps have more dealers show up every year (maybe even a few will come from the US).

I went this afternoon and yes there will be another show here in September. We always use to have two shows a year here in Calgary but for several years now it has been down to one a year. The dealers that I spoke with said it was good show for them and had heavy traffic especially on Saturday. @nicklenubber...There wasn't a single 1935 or 36 JOP dollar to be had at this show. I was quite surprise than nobody had any. One dealer even said that he won't touch them. He said one of the original JOP stamps is believed to be still out there and in the possession of a coin dealer in Vancouver. First time I have ever heard this but who knows?
